Baseball Almanac has lists of debuts for every year, so I looked through those starting in 1992, when your typical 1974 baby would be 18. No 1974 babies debuted in '92, '93, or '94...interestingly, a 1975 baby debuted before any 1974 babies, as an 18-year old on 7-8-94, some kid named Alex Rodriguez.

The first 1974 baby I find was Ugueth Urbina, who was born 2-15-74 and debuted 5-9-95. Next was Jim Pittsley, born 4-3-74 debuted 5-23-95, followed by Derek Jeter, born 6-26-74 debuted 5-29-95. Then came Roger Cedeno (born 8-16-74 debuted 6-20-95), Ramon Morel (born 8-15-74 debuted 7-6-95), and Shannon Stewart (born 2-25-74 debuted 9-2-95).

You mentioned A-Rod debuting at age 18. I know King Felix Hernandez was the youngest debut in since A-Rod when he made it at 19 a couple years ago. Wonder when the last 18 year old before A-Rod to make MLB was?

Seems it isn't as common in the last 40-50 years to have 18 year old debuts as it was in baseball's earlier days (and during the war years).

Edit: It probably was Ken Griffey Jr. to answer my first question now that I think about it.

I remember Robin Yount's debut at 18, as a starting shortstop no less, in 1974. Got his autograph on the same ball as Hank Aaron's at an exhibition game a few days before Opening Day.
