--Welcome to the 1966 CKL Rookie Draft. The draft officially commences at 8PM EST on July 6. The clock starts ticking then and we will complete the first 3 rounds that evening. Untimed pre-drafting is now open. This should ensure that most people are able to make their own first round picks and give an opportunity for pick trading if anyone is looking to do that. All players who made their first MLB appearance in 1966 are eligible for this draft.

--The Leecemark Knights are pleased to announce the selection of infielder Sal Bando as the first pick of the 1966 rookie draft. Smokey Braithwaite had this to say of the selection; "Our scouts are really high on this kid. Bando has a great idea of what he is trying to do at the plate. Really patient and selective for a young slugger. He is a big strong young man who we project to eventually hit 25-30 HR. He has been a SS, but we see his future at thirdbase. He has great hands, a strong arm and is pretty athletic, but not quite rangy enough for a major league SS - especially as he grows into his power. Our fans are probably going to have to wait a few years to see him at Tiger Stadium, but he should be one of the centerpieces of our team by the late 60s and well into the next decade."

Yes, I have Dan's list. I'll also make my first round pick early once Wil makes his. Mine is all set unless Wil takes him.
Incidentally, very nice choice Mark, especially with you needing a thirdbaseman. Bando doesn't do much for two years, but in 68 he's just above league average in OPS+, and then he takes off. That Hometown Discount should help when he hits free agency, too!

Mark, you forgot to note that the Redbirds own the Knights first rounder, giving them 3 picks in a row.

--Fixed that. Th draft ought to be going pretty quick from the mid-first to mid-2nd rounds. 8 of 9 (and 9 of 11) picks are either the Redbirds or Legends.

Mark, you forgot to note that the Redbirds own the Knights first rounder, giving them 3 picks in a row.
... two of which (12,13) were traded to me for Joe Morgan.

07-01-2007, 07:01 AM
--I guess this draft won't be quite as big for the Redbirds.....(from the offseason thread).... Little Joe was a terriffic player for us this past season. But with two other very good 2nd basemen on board in Ron Hunt and and Bill Mazeroski, we can't resist the chance to trade him for future talent. In exchange for Morgan, the HC receive their own '66 1st round pick back, along with the 'Birds 2nd round pick.
catcher24
07-01-2007, 09:16 AM
And then I took Morgan off the Redbirds' hands for Matty Alou and Andy Etchebarren. So that's what Scott ended up with for the 12th and 13th picks in this draft.

Well, I tried to swing a trade with Wil to switch draft spots but it didn't fly. And God bless his little soul, he didn't take my man.:applaud: :clapping :p You're right, Mark, no reason I'd need George Scott with Stretch holding down first base for me, and Felipe Alou in reserve. He wasn't even on my radar, except very late as a possible trade item. That being the case, the Legends, with the number three pick, take:

REGGIE SMITH
catcher24
07-02-2007, 08:02 PM
Legends manager Gene Mauch seemed very pleased to have gotten young outfielder Reggie Smith in the draft. Mauch told reporters:" There were a couple of pitchers we thought might go ahead of Reggie, but we felt he was one of the top young players available in this draft and really didn't think he'd fall to third unless a team needed pitching. I was completely taken by surprise when both Bando and Scott were taken ahead of Smith. I'm sure they'll develop into fine players and they were in our sights as well, but Reggie is a switch hitter and has very decent speed. He fits our team well, and we feel that with a minimum of minor league experience he can play for us every day. We think he'll develop into a fine hitter and look for him to be with us for many seasons."
leecemark
07-02-2007, 08:13 PM
--It was between Bando and Smith for me in deciding the 1st pick. With Willie Mays still a quality CF thru all 6 years that we'd be assured of having Smith we weren't looking to fill that spot. Billy Williams should be holding down another OF spot thru at least 1972 (assuming we can dodge this last year of forced free agency). Nailing down 3B seemed more important than locking up that last OF spot.
--Max, the Stingers may pick whenever you're ready.
catcher24
07-03-2007, 02:40 PM
Well, I'm sure glad you decided to go with Bando. I think that I have good players at all positions for 1966 and 1967, but with Reggie aboard I have the option of trading Northrup or Felipe Alou, at least after this season. At this point, I have solid guys everywhere for the next two years, so I'm really trying to improve my playoff hopes for the future. I also know who I would've taken had Smith been gone, but I don't want to tip my hand, since there's an outside chance he might still be around for my next pick.
leecemark
07-03-2007, 04:33 PM
--I'm surprised Smith was your target. Not because he wasn't a great pick, but because I thought he had no chance to be available with the 3rd pick. I'd say there is more than an outside chance your next guy is still available when you pick next becuase I don't see much difference between the next dozen for so guys. Lots of guys who will help somebody, but nobody who is a difference maker (unless you are really willing to wait for the payoff AND count on keeping your guy on the hometown discount).
The Dude
07-03-2007, 08:20 PM
I thought about Smith, but with Carty, Cardenal, Mantle, Flood, and Brown manning the OF, I thought Scott was a better fit for the team with Boyer possibley being gone and Skowron on the spiral downwards. Plus with Ceullar finally playing this year, no reason to draft one of the excellent SP avaliable.
catcher24
07-04-2007, 09:40 AM
--I'm surprised Smith was your target. Not because he wasn't a great pick, but because I thought he had no chance to be available with the 3rd pick.
He was my target almost from the start. I made offers to both Scott and Wil in order to move up in the draft, because I didn't think Smith would last until third, either. And when I saw you had traded for Scott's #1 overall, and you also had put Horton on the market, I figured I was done, that you had your eye on Smith. Glad I was wrong, and also glad that Wil needed a firstbaseman. I'm hoping that with the 20% discount I'll get at the end of six years I can keep Smith for several more years.
I expect to get three good players with the 8th thru 10th picks, as there are still several very decent players left. This draft is actually better than I had originally thought, perhaps because I was looking at a specific position and didn't appreciate the talent available at other positions until I started looking a bit more closely.

07-05-2007, 10:50 PM
--I may be a few minutes late for the draft, but it doesn't need to wait on me. The Stingers will have had 4 days to pick by the time the official start rolls around. The Gold Sox can go ahead at 8:01 EST if Max hasn't checked in to pick. I have the Redbirds list and will be here before their turn comes up (probably by the scheduled start time for that matter). I want to keep the draft moving as quickly as possible so anybody not present or having a list to someone else will be skipped over and have to take a make up pick when they show.

1966 is a total loss, but then his fewest PA over the next five years is 409 in 1971, so he'll be close to a regular for me. And then I get the Hometown Discount if I want, and he's a very good regular for the next five seasons (72-76), with no fewer than 520 PA's and all OPS+ of 124 or higher except 1972 (107).

I like Colbert where he went too. A RH 1Bman who with just a little platooning by any serviceable lefty can put up numbers... and play excellent defense.
There went the last consistent hitter for his rookie contract though, from what I've seen.

The Redbirds have announced that starting 3Bman Bob Bailey has asked to be traded. He looks primed for another solid season, but is worried about rookie Joe Foy taking his ABs. When asked what might suit the Redbirds needs, GM Jim Bowden says..."just like every other team, we're looking to stockpyle as many young OFers with tools as possible, regardless of what they have done in the past"....Bowden was fired instantly.
Bailey remains on the block, with a live arm a likely target.

The Cannons will take pitcher Mel Queen.
I don't see Queen listed...
But anyways, the Skipjacks select P Minnie Rojas.
Since we traded for it, we would also like to at least use the Gold Sox 4th round pick. For what that's worth.

Womack was a decent pickup this late in the draft. My pick was between Upshaw and Womack, but Upshaw had more seasons that were good when I really need them.
Nice pickup on Queen, too, Chris. You'll only get two decent seasons out of him, but they're really good ones.
Thanks all for making this another interesting evening. I'm checking out now. Looking forward to the free agent free-for-all next week!!:laugh
OK then... we're somewhat pleased with getting pitching depth for '66-'67 in Womack and Rojas, but Hughes would've been much nicer.
It's easy to declare the Legends this year's winner so besides them, I like what the Shoeless Joes did to bolster their pitching staff. Peterson, Bosman & Reed were all good selections where they were taken.
Also the Hard Cider did well as they do every year at the end of the round, taking Andrews (yet another 2B) and Jarvis and stealing Hughes the one-year wonder at the end of Rd 2.

Queen would have been a good pick - if eligible. Instead the Cannons pick slides down at least 3 spots.

And you know, I thought that Queen had been taken so I went to BBref to check. I looked at his pitching record, which was at the top and started in 1966, and of course didn't scroll down any further (hey, it was late and I was tired:crazy ), or I would've seen the 1964 batting record.
