Tommy McCarthy is the only outfielder to have ever done this.

Started the game as a pitcher, went to play outfield and finished the game as a pitcher?

I have no idea if that is true or not or if it is unique, but the question refers to something McCarthy did as an outfielder.

Can an outfielder get an unassisted triple play? That must be one rare feat.

I have no idea...just a guess, lol. I suppose if he's playing mighty shallow, makes an amazing play, and aided with some real bad baserunning...:laugh

unassisted triple play?
I guess it is possible for an OFer to record an unassisted triple play, but it has never been done.

Per B-A:
"On May 8, 1878, Paul Hines was credited with a triple play which was correct for the "rules in play." However, by modern rules it was an unassisted double play with a throw to second base for the third out."
So Hines is not relevant to this question.

Tommy McCarthy is the only HOF'er who played in the 1884 Union Association...is remembered for perfecting the trapped ball ploy...some say he invented the hit'n'run...but I find nothin' about being the only outfielder to do something, unless it has to do with his record 53 assists in 1893 - only OF'er to have more than 50 assists in a season? If, not, I'll take a wild guess - only OF'er to make a putout at home plate?

Ran across this tidbit just after posting the above:
"For example, on August 15, 1894, McCarthy made one of the most unusual triple plays in baseball history. With Duffy out with an injury, Tommy was positioned in centerfield in the ninth inning with men on first and second. The batter smacked a short fly to center as Tommy charged in, smartly let the ball drop in front of him, then short hopped it to second baseman Bobby Lowe . The runner from first was forced out at second and Lowe's peg nailed the hitter by a hair at first. The third out was made by McCarthy who was covering home plate for the Beaneater catcher who was woefully out of position!"

McCarthy was the only OFer to start and end a triple play.

Bill Merritt (PIT) is the batter. He hit to short left centre. The CF (Tommy McCarthy) made a bluff to catch the ball and took it on the pickup and
threw to the 2B (Bobby Lowe) who tagged the runner at second, Joe Sugden, who hadn't moved (OUT 1)
2B then stepped on the keystone to force out the runner from first, Fred Hartman (OUT 2) Sugden, not realizing that he was already out, broke
for third. 2B threw to the 3B (Billy Nash) who tagged Sugden (unnecessarily).
3B saw that the batter, Bill Merritt, had passed first, fired over to the 1B (Tommy Tucker) who stepped on the bag but the batter, thinking that the
inning was over, walked back to home. CF got the ball from 1B and tagged the batter (OUT 3)
