View Full Version : Players reacquired by the same team

It's always struck me as weird when a team reacquires a player that it once traded, sold or released. It is like they are saying, "We changed our minds". But it happens a lot, of course.
My questions:
1) Has this ever happened to a player twice? (i.e., being reacquired by two separate teams and therefore having 4 stints, 2 with each team)
2) Has a player ever been reacquired twice by the same team? (i.e. three separate stints with the same team).
Thanks.

This was a weird one -----
Ron Hassey was involved in three trades between the Yankees and the White Sox within an eight-month period. He was traded by the Yankees in December 1985, but was returned in a February 1986 trade, only to be sent back to Chicago again in July.

Bobo Newsom had FOUR different stints with the Washington Senators. He also had two stints with the Browns and the Dodgers, and spent time with the Cubs, Red Sox, Tigers, A's, Yankees, and Giants. Quite the remarkable career.

On the National League side, Barney Schultz was acquired by the Cardinals three times. The third time was in the off-season of 1967 for one month just to entitle him to a Major League pension.

I believe Rickey had 4 different stints with the A's and Harold Baines had 3 stints with the White Sox and 3 with the Orioles.

Right you are! I missed the ten games that he pitched for the Senators in 1952.

How about the "Player to be named later" in a trade, turns out to be THAT player?

Brandon Lyon's Transaction History. Looks like Lyon and Mike Gonzalez got traded back and forth as well.

Well Howie Clark, a former Chief broke in to the majors with the O's. The next year he was traded to Toronto where he was usedhalf way through the season as a utiliy guy and hit over.350 that year. The next year he played a bit more with the Jays, then didn't play in the majors in 2005, but the year after that(2006) he was traded and played for the O's for a small amount of time and just this year he was signed again by the Blue Jays and is currently playing for them right now, so his transactions look like this:
2002-O's
2003-Jays
2004-Jays
2005-None(O's organization)
2006-O's
2007-Jays

Rafael Palmeiro went from Texas to Baltimore, back to Texas, and then back to Baltimore to end his career.
If he hadn't started his career with the Chicago Cubs, he would fit your first question almost to a T.
