The Washington Nationals today (Sunday, June 24th) traded minor league Darnell McDonald (who was hitting .315 with two homers and 41 RBIs in 73 games at Columbus) to the Minnesota Twins, who had only picked up Speigner on Tuesday (19th).

Admittedly the Nats outfield is a bit crowded now, but why did the Nats give up a good hitting prospect for a 2-3 pitcher with an 8.78 ERA? (Speigner will be assigned to Columbus.) Am I missing something here? Does someone in the organization think he can get his act together and improve his performance at the major league level?

Anyone care to enlighten me?

McDonald's 29, so he's not really a prospect anymore. Spiegner's not a starter, but pitched pretty well out of the bullpen early in the year. The Nats must see something in him that they think is worth working on. Now that they can send him to Columbus, they can let him try and develop without getting his as* handed to him every 5th day.

He was good in the 'pen, and GM's don't forget once someone's good, let him pitch in the minors a bit and we'll give him a shot should someone go down.
