Recently, I uncovered this gem in my collection of baseball stuff, a 1989 The Sporting News Scouting Notebook. I find it very interesting to see what scouts said about players back then as compared to what we have seen from them now. But instead, instead of just posting what it says, I'd like to make a game of it.

What I will do is post little snippets from their scouting report, and from those snippets, try and guess who the player is. I will post a new one each day, or if I find some one has correctly guessed the player I'll put up another one. Pretty straight forward.

I will use players that should be fairly well known, some better than others. If you see an XXX in the sentence, that means I'm just covering up the player's name to conceal his identity. Also remember, this is from 1989 and not everything a scouting report says is neccessarily going to come true.

Good luck, and here comes the first scouting report...

...failed to hit a game winning RBI in 1988...this is a hitter who should be in the majors 10-15 years...Blessed with a good eye and a short stroke, he is extremely tough to strike out...some scouts think he could be a homer hitter in the 20-25 range...There can be no questioning he is a gap hitter...subpar outfielder last season...should be a better fit at first...a sneak thief.

Who is he?

Sorry, so are these guys rookies, or guys who are being drafted? Or what...

No, these are guys already in the major leagues, and the info given is for 1 player, as taken out of TSN Scouting Notebook for 1989. The object is to guess which well know player is being described.
