--Welcome to what I hope is another exciting offseason for the Classic Keeper league. With 5 seasons in the books everybody should know what to expect by now. Here is your opportunity to fine tune for a run at the 1966 pennant or build toward your contender of the future.
--The first deadline is for non-tendering players you do not wish to keep under contract for 1966 or buying out deals (at half the remaining value) for players you have signed to multi-year deals. That must be done by midnight EST on June 29. The rookie draft will be (tenatively) scheduled one week later for 8PM EST on July 6. The Premium Free Agent Auction (PFA) on June 13 at the same time, with the secondary auction commencing immediately after and concluding at 9PM EST on Monday the 16th. The first deadline is a hard one. The rest can be shifted if several owners have problems with them. I know we are moving into the summer vacation season.
--Please review the roster attachment and let me know who is missing from your roster or assigned there who shouldn't be (I'm sure I missed some expiring contracts of lesser players). The batting and pitching register register attachments are all players not assigned to a roster. That includes both free agents and rookies.

--Here is a tenative list of Premium Free Agents. Please review your salary list and point out any errors. Your Franchise Player and any player whose contract expires after this season do not count toward salary slotting.
--Robert, you don't have the years down for your FA signings. If Willie Davis was a multi-year deal he would be one of your PFA options. You need to make that decision before the June 29 non-tender date.

1) Hard Cider: Rocky Colavito* (bought out)
2) Knights: Gene Oliver* (bought out)
3) Skipjacks: Bob Allison
4) Cannons: Jim Perry
5) Diablos: Lou Johnson*
6/7) Pirates: Frank Bolling
6/7) Shoeless Joes: Ed Baily
8) Gold Sox: John Buzhardt
9) Stingers: Pedro Ramos
10) Legends: Jerry Buchek*
11) Gamblers: Ken Boyer*
12) Redbirds: Jay Ritchie

* = players on multi-ytear deals subject to trade/waive/keep provisions. These players are still assinged to their current rosters until a move has been made.

--At this point the only players I intend to individually auction off are Rocky Colavito, Jim Perry, Bob Allison from the PFA class, expiring contract free agents Frank Howard and Milt Pappas and non-tendered Johnny Callison. Please bring any other worthy players to my attention. The PFA isn't shaping up to be a very exciting event this year.

The only guy besides Allison I don't see is C John Sullivan, whose contract is expiring and doesn't play in 1966 anyway.

Pizarro, Ridzik, and Stephenson were all signed to one-year deals, which expired after 1965.

On the block:

Joe Morgan & Ron Hunt

I will trade one of these two outstanding 2nd basemen (both signed through 1968) for a shortstop, pitching, draft picks, or some combination of the above. Morgan has huge seasons coming up in '66 and '67. Hunt is good '66-'68. Both are very cheap.

Norm Cash

He's expensive, but this 1st baseman, and original '61 draftee, is still one of the better hitters in the league. If you need a bat and have the cap room, make me an offer.

I'll be taking offers for Bert Campaneris and Denis Menke if anyone's interested. Campaneris can be a good solution at SS for anyone who's looking for one, he's an awesome baserunner as well. Menke can be a good offensive option at SS or 3B this upcoming year. I'll be looking for draft picks, pitching, or a 1Bman primarily, but if you have anything else I'll still listen as well.

The Gold Sox are listening to all offers for Johnny Callison and Leon Wagner. Callison has a whole bunch of good seasons left, and if you're looking for a guy who can give you a big bat right away, but you don't like Callison's price tag, Wagner is a little cheaper.

Expiring Redbird contracts:
Ron Brand
Pat Corrales
Billy Hoeft
Bob Duliba

All are free agents.

Also, the Redbirds have the intention of dealing the #1 overall pick, and would like to officially open the bidding.

--The Knights will be parting with several players who have played a big part in the team's success over the past five years.
Jim Gentile - the former MVP and 3 time All Star lost his starting job in 1965 and is too expensive to hang around as a backup. Thanks for everything and good luck, Jim.
Junior Gilliam - our starting secondbaseman and leadoff man since the team was founded. Jim has been breaking down some in the past couple seasons and we are going to go with some of our youngsters this year. There is always a job for Junior in the the organization when he is ready to hang them up.
Lee Thomas - Lee has been a starter a various times in RF/LF and 1B. Injuries are an issue with him too and again some young talent has made him expendable. Best wishes.
Barney Schultz - Barney is not only the Knights career leader in saves, he is tied for the CKL record. Time appears to have caught up to him though and he spent most of 1965 in the minors. Its been a pleasure having you on the ballclub Barney!
Don Larsen, Bill Henry and Arnie Early - a wave of young arms and injuries to their own sends this group of relievers to the FA market. All have mmade some nice contributions to the Knights and we wish them well in finding a new club to play for.
Bob Bruce - Bob had a great rookie campaign in 1964 and was our Opening Day starter in 1965. The second time around didn't go so well though and he has been passed by younger pitchers on our depth chart.

We are buying out the contracts of the following players;
Camilio Pascaul was the ace of the first 3 Knights teams, winning a CYA and going to the All Star game each year. He was traded away in 1964, but returned in 65 to make the All Star game a 4th time. Pascaul is both the Knights and CKL all time leader in wins. Sadly he will be undergoing elbow surgery this offseason and it doesn't look like he will be able to pitch this season.
Gene Oliver was our big free agent signing in 1964, but didn't quite live up to expectations and then demanded a trade after being relegated to platoon duty. We'll take the cap hit and let him try free agency over again.

25 man active squad

The following players have expiring contracts:

LF Bob Allison (8.0) PFA - gonna miss Bob quite a bit. He was a cornerstone of the franchise to this point. But, management will likely not pursue the aging veteran.

LHP Bo Belinsky (.25) $65
RHP Jim Dickson (.25) $65
OF Len Gabrielson (.25) $64-65
RHP Howie Koplitz (.25) $65
SS Ray Oyler (.25) $65
C John Sullivan (.25) $64-65
2B Jake Wood (.25) $64-65

The Skipjacks are also releasing the following players:

RHP Bob Friend (7.0) - big pickup in trade last year didn't live up to his billing as his age quickly caught up to him.

C Johnny Edwards (1.5) - did great for the team last year; no one knows for sure why he was let go. Some wonder if he suffered an injury...

RHP Ed Roebuck (.75) - couldn't get out of the minors last season. Looks like he's washed up. Thanks for helping in '64 Ed.

RHP Joe Sparma (.5) #64 - filler material. Thanks again for '64 Joe.

Total Salary (28 players) = 78.00 mil

In the first major trade of the offseason, the Skipjacks acquire 3B Brooks Robinson from the EB Gold Sox in a continuation of the contraversial Sandy Koufax deal at this past season's trade deadline.

GM Beanie Bill: "We're very excited to get Brooks back. He is one of the premier defensive infielders in the league, and probably carries the best bat of all of them... Brooks was one player we didn't want to let go, but we were simply outbid for his services under the cap. This time we anticipate having just enough to keep him around for the duration of his current contract... I just hope he doesn't ask for more money next time around!"

In return, the Skipjacks are sending their replacement 3B Pete Ward to the Gold Sox, along with the 2nd round pick they acquired from them in the Koufax deal... the Gold Sox will also officially send their '66 3rd round pick to the Skipjacks, which was promised to them by word after the Koufax deal was finalized.

How does Brooks feel about the situation? "Well, I enjoyed my stay with the Gold Sox quite a bit and they're building a solid team there. But it'll be nice to get back with my old teammates." He then asked if Boog Powell was still on the team after a subpar '65 season, and was relieved to find out he made the cut.

Brooks Robinson (18.0)
Rd 3 pick - '66
--------------------------
Pete Ward (1.25)
Rd 2 pick - '68 (original Gold Sox pick)

--The Knights don't expect to do a whole lot of wheeling and dealing this offseason. We're pretty solid for 1966 and looking more to pick up so future value. We can spare an outfielder; Willie Horton, Billy Williams or young Adolpho Phillips (CFer with OPS+ of 119, 136 and 109 the next three years). We also have some pitching depth. Young arms Dave Boswell, Jim McGlothlin and Tug McGraw are available. Also Mike McCormick, who provides 216 IP of solid work this year for minimum wage (but will be in free agent in 67).
--We could use a first and thirdbaseman of the future. An ace quality pitcher would be nice if somebody has one to spare. Draft choices are always welcome too.

The Gold Sox confirm the Robinson deal.

leecemark
06-15-2007, 07:37 AM
--Robinson provides a huge upgrade at thirdbase for the Skipjacks. Don't know that he is worth that huge contract, but the addition probably moves the Skipjacks from leading contender to clear favorite in the Hulbert - at least for the moment! It would appear that the Gold Sox have shifted to full on rebuilding mode and clearing that salary sure jump starts the process.

--A reminder for all who have a player under a multi-year deal as their PFA this season. Those players are not free agents and remain on your roster for now (for example, Boyer is player 31 on the Gamblers and his salary counts against their cap). They are considered to have demanded a trade. You have until 24 hours for the PFA draft to make a deal. If you haven't made one by then they go on waivers for that 24 hour period. If no one claims them they stick with you. If you really want to get rid of them you need to buy out their contract, as I did with Gene Oliver.

Also, Rudy May is under contract, but uncarded...he'll stay :)

The Legends and Redbirds have agreed to a trade. The Redbirds will be sending the recently acquired Joe Morgan to the Legends. In exchange, the Legends will be sending Matty Alou and Andy Etchebarren to the Redbirds. Legends manager Gene Mauch commented: "We liked the potential that Matty had, but we feel that Morgan will fit into our club's leadoff position better than Alou. The Redbirds insisted on us including a catcher in the deal, and since Bill Freehan is an untouchable for us, we sent young Etchebarren, since he was the only other catcher we had left who was anywhere near ready for the major league level. 06-21-2007, 07:19 AM
--Knights GM Smokey Braithwaite had this to say about the trade "we hated to part with Willie. He had a great rookie season and was an instant fan favorite. We hope not to earn picks near the top of the draft though and the chance to pick up the first pick in this one was an opportunity too good to pass up. We are confident we have enough outfield depth to cover the loss of Horton. Adolpo Phillips had a great season at AAA and we needed to find a spot for him. Young Tommy Agee is a nice adddition too. He isn't likely to match Horton's bat, but he is a tremendous defender and very good baserunner."
--"Mike McCormick had a nice season for us last year as well, but he was looking to be squeezed out of the rotation and Aguirre may be better suited for the bullpen than McCormick. Hank has lost some zip since his CYA season several years ago, but is still very effective against LH batters. "
--Horace Clarke may also make a contribution for us this season. He will compete with Jose Pagan for a utility IF spot and may even give Dick Green a run for the startign 2B job."

Bando was high on my list, but he wasn't my primary target. I probably would've taken him as a first rounder further down, to replace Santo in the late 60s. But with you taking Bando first, the chances improve of my man making it to me!

Incidentally, Mark, you might want to remind everyone that any players drafted as rookies in 1963 will get their bump (salary doubling) this off season (end of third year).

Leave it to you Mark to already be planning ahead for expansion! Early draft picks now will be exposed to the 1969 expansion draft (likely, anyways) depending on how we do it. Not so those rookies drafted in 1969!

BTW, other than Mark and myself, I haven't as yet seen any comments in the expansion thread regarding how the expansion and, more particularly the protected lists, should work in 1969. Please think about this issue and post your thoughts and preferences about it. At the rate we're playing seasons, this is only about a year off in real time and will be here before you know it. This will directly affect your team, so take the time to add your input.

leecemark

--The expansion questions will be resolved before the rookie draft this offseason, as how many protected players we keep should be part of team's draft strategy for this year. That means we will decide one way or the other in the next 10 days or so. If you want your opinion to be heard speak up now.
--The non-tender deadline is this Friday, June 29 at midnight EST. The rookie draft is the following Friday, July 6. Please be prepared. Although no one has said anything about not being available for the draft I know summer weekends get busy. If you think you might not make it, be working on a draft list to submit to me or someone else you know will be here. Not present and no proxy list will get you skipped over and have to choose from the leftovers when you check in.

Diablos' cuts:

Ray Barker: Meh.
Bob Klaus: Have a happy retirement!
Eddie Kasko, Jeff Torborg: Can't recall why I signed these guys in the first place, let alone gave them roster spots.
Milt Pappas: Yeah, his contract is expiring anyway; I just want to revel in my not having to pay him $13 mill any more.
Tracy Stallard: See Pappas.
Fred Newman: Meh.
Bill Pleis: This is painful; he does have a 187 ERA+ in 1966, but the Diablos need the cap space.
Russ Nixon, Pedro Gonzalez, Bobby Wine: The Carl Pavano All Stars.
Tony Kubek: Retiring, but not in the hearts of real world Yankee fans.
Hank Fischer: Something tells me I'm going to regret this. Not sure why, as I can probably find 117 innings of 83 ERA+ ball cheaper than $1.5 mill, but I'm still leary.

That should leave me with 27 players about a buck and a half of cap space.

Oh, just asking idly: When Wilbur Wood makes his major league debut pitching in middle relief in 1967, will he officially be the last of the 1961 original draft picks to hit the big show? I'm loving those seasons he puts up from '67 to '73 (his '71 season, when he'll be paid $3 mill, might go down as the greatest steal in the history of Classic Keeper League), but it does somewhat irk me that he'll be earning $2 mill for the sixth straight season to not play.

Wood's 1971 could be one of the least commonly known great seasons of all time. Vida Blue won MVP but Wood was probably better actually. Really, how often is that mentioned as one of the best pitching seasons ever, yet based on the numbers it probably is.

I guess nobody wants Callison in a trade, so I'll just make the FA auction a little more interesting.

Gold Sox cut:

Johnny Callison - Sorry Johnny, you've been our biggest star for the past two years, and we'll never forget what you did for the team in '64, but we just can't afford to keep you around any more.
John Orsino - With Randy Hundley taking over, I have no need for three catchers any more. Plus, Orsino's useless for the rest of his career.
John Stephenson - Why did I sign this guy?
Walt Bond - Sorry, but your leukemia will limit your play to the point where we have to let you go. We promise to give your wife a package once you pass away.
Steve Ridzik - Was great in '64, not so much in '65. Enjoy retirement.
Zoilo Versalles - Contract expires, now we need a SS.
John Buzhardt - Losing him to PFA would hurt if he put up anything close to the production of his last two years in '66.
Bennie Daniels - Enjoy retirement.
Juan Pizarro - His best days are clearly behind him.
Jack Baldschun - Had his best years taken away by playing for the Phils in 1961.
Jim Owens - Was my best reliever last year. Of course, that isn't saying much.
Dick Stigman - Go be useless someplace else.

Just looking at Ken Sanders and John Hiller's pages on BR made me realize that I'll finally have a legit closer for four out of five years starting in 1970. That is, if I can hang on to both of them.

--Callison will join the slim PFA auction class adn I wouldn't be surprised if somebody pays him close to the 10.5M he was going to get from the Gold Sox. Not exactly a superstar, but he is a very solid player in a very weak market. I probably would have kept him and let Daddy Wags go if I'd had to choose between them.

I agree with Mark. Callison will still patrol the OF for several years, while Wagner will shortly have the range of a phone booth.

This is a good year for us to be near the cap. We have very little room left on the 25-man roster as it is, and our farm team isn't looking too promising anymore with all our big prospects playing by now.

One more bullet to go and we will have dodged 5/6. And gotten our one loss back albeit at an exorbitant price. :crossfingers:

--Here is what I have for rosters as of the end of this auction. 5 teams are at 40 and 4 others within 1-2 either way. The Pirates need 14 players (contrary to my previous comment they did land 1 free agent). The Gamblers need 6 and the Diablos need to cut a dozen players after their FA blitz last night.
--There is one correction made after I downloaded the attachment. The Stingers signed Curt Simmons only to later see he had been signed by the Diablos. Since Jim was already 11 players over the cap I originally went ahead and let Max have Simmons. When I came back to the thread I see Max had edited from Simmons to Pizzaro. So Pizzaro is a Stinger and Simmons the 52nd Diablo.
--Please point out any errors on your roster ASAP and make needed cuts/signings ASAP. Profiles due by Friday. Anyone under 40 at midnight Friday will have a cap penalty of 250K per spot charged. Anyone over I'll release a minimum wage free agent(s) if you have one. Otherwise I'll select someone else. I'll also be building profiles saturday for any team which doesn't get one submitted by Friday.

The Pirates would like to announce a trade with the Stingers. The Pirates are sending relief pitcher Dick Lines to the Stingers in exchange for SS Zoilo Versalles.

The Pirates are sad to see Lines leave, as they feel he could be a solid addition to their bullpen, but they had a need to fill a hole in their lineup, and they saw that as more important at the moment.

If I've missed something along the way please let me know as soon as possible. I show 5 teams not at 40 players now. The Cannons (38), Gold Sox (-3), Hard Cider (+1) and Gamblers (-1) are minor issues. The Pirates still have some serious work to do with only 26 players under contract.
--Robert, you need to add a few pitchers (only 10) and at least 1 more catcher (less than 500 AB total and Talton is not even eligible except in case of injury) as part of your 14. Unless you can show me a post I missed the missing players reduce your cap figure for this season to 96.50M (250K for each player short). The same would apply to the other 3 teams under, although its less than 1M of a cap hit in each of their cases. Mac, you need to either point out who shouldn't be on your roster or cut someone today.
--If you haven't submitted a 25 man roster and profile I've set one up for your team. Please submit as soon as possible so to get it to where you want it. Max, Lines is in the minors until you make an adjustment to your profile. I won't be posting the temporary ones. You'll know who is where in your rotation from the games reports, but you'll have to check the boxscores at Lew's website once he gets games posted there.
--Here are the rosters I have for Opeing Day and the list of current free agents. Teams may sign one player in excess of 40 after each series, assuming they have cap space, after each series.
