Of all the players that have led their league in homeruns, who has hit the fewest singles in the year they led in HRs?

It's going to be hard to beat Gavy Cravath's 38 singles in 1919, unless you go to some very short seasons back in the 1870's.

Bonds '01 only had 49 singles.
Williams '94 only had 57 singles.
Ruth '19 only had 64 singles.
Schmidt '75 only had 65 singles.
Evans '85 only had 68 singles.
Kiner '52 only had 70 singles.
Johnson '91 only had 70 singles.
Mitchell '89 only had 71 singles.

Well, I tried.

Bonds was the answer I was looking for. He hit 73 homers in 01, but hit only 49 singles. Both are records.

However, Gee Walker gets full credit as well because I did not specify "in a full season" (Cravath played in only 83 games that year). His answer is the correct one according to how I worded it.

I don't see how Bonds can have this record. Cravath had fewer singles and he led the league in HR's. Their is no attendance or plate appearance requirement to lead the league in HR's.

So if a player bats 5 times, and get no singles, he leads the league in fewest singles? I doubt Caravath had enough PA to qualify for that record.

But, he did lead in homers, and I'm saying it was my wording that was obscure, so Caravth is a correct answer.

Because HR is not a rate stat, so there's no need for minimum requirements to lead the league in it.
