i like the circle-change. If you throw it well, you can get it to break like a screwball or sink.

What is the most effective offspeed pitch?
One that a batter can't hit even when he's expecting it.
The one you can throw with the most confidence and effectiveness.
Basically this. Big league pitchers got their signature pitches because they take it to a whole different level.
Carlton's slider wasn't one of the best ever because that type of pitch is objectively the best. He had a great slider because it was his best pitch and he had the "feel" of it down.

What is the most effective offspeed pitch?
The one that is to most deceptive to the batter at that given moment. It might be that the most effective pitch to a batter is a hook, slider, CU, cutter, sinker, screwball, splitter, palm ball, KB, or anything else.
FI, I wouldn’t throw 3 CU’s in a row to most batters, but I might throw a CU, cutter, hook. So much depends on the pitcher, the batter, and the situation, its impossible to say “Pitch “A” is the best OS pitch”.

Or the one that can make the batter think it's a strike.

I believe, whole-heartedly, that the best pitch in baseball is the "batting practice" fastball, thrown for a strike. When you get into trouble, throw softer! Hitters that "sense the kill" will inevitably grip the bat more tightly and swing harder. Throw softer and quit trying to strike everyone out. Groundballs are wonderful, and they most often allow pitchers to throw "deeper" into games.
A little on . . . a little off . . . a little in . . . a little out . . . a little up . . . a little down . . .

Pitching isn't terribly complex; don't make it so.

Excellent advice for pro P’s. Great advice for College P’s. But, although its still good advice for HS P’s, whether or not it pays as high of dividends, its certainly questionable. And for sure at levels below that, its really a debatable subject.
What’s sad is, it doesn’t have a thing to do with the P, but rather is extremely dependent on the defense. :dismay:
Some MLB pitchers I've seen use a splitter or forkball as their off-speed pitch.

Okajima of the Red Sox
Well, the one pitcher I was going to point out was Rich Harden of the A's, who's got a pretty good splitter he throws in the low 80's to complement his mid-high 90's fastball.
