hey im an outfielder and i have a pretty strong arm but i get sidespin on my throws and from the outfield you can really see it tail if im gunning it to 2nd or something. I want to be able to get that straight tight backspin where you can almost hear the ball whistle by. Are there any good training aids or sites that have the proper throwing mechanics.

my son's coach's and instructor always says to throw a 4 seam fastball whenever possible when in the field cause it generally will give you the straightest flight. the drill he was told to do was take a ball toss it up catch it and try to set the grip as a 4 seam before you set and throw. the coaches said it takes alot of reps to get your hand to automaticly do this with out thinking of it. took him about a month before he really started to see working.
side note he walked aroung the house and out in the yard and when ever we practiced doing this and checking the grip before he threw

when you throw the ball get your fingers directly behind it. Don't let them turn off to the side.

Should it be when you release the ball? He may get this confused with pointing the fingers back???

Hey Gem,
Over the years I’ve heard variations of the following more than a few times, but I’ve yet to check with a real ML or Ex-ML player who says its something that’s possible to do in the heat of making a play.
More often I hear something very similar to what you said, but its often coupled with an admonition to throw as much over-the-top as possible. Are you assuming that the throw from the OF is gonna be made most often fairly over-the-top and that’s why you didn’t mention the arm angle, or is it that you don’t think arm angle has much to do with it?
