1 pair Peavy vs. Beckett 7-0
2 pair Penny vs. Lackey 2-5
3 pair Smoltz vs. Haren 4-3 (???????)
4 pair Hamels vs. Sabathia 5-2
5 pair Young vs. J.Santana 0-7
6 pair Maine vs. Verlander 3-4
7 pair Oswalt vs. Matsuzaka 6-1

These pairings are a joke. Matsuzaka on a par with Oswalt? Why don't we try something where the pitchers are actually similar, something like...

1. Haren vs. Peavy
2. Beckett vs. Lilly
3. Shields vs. Hudson
4. Santana vs. Young
5. Washburn vs. Sheets
6. Lackey vs. Penny
7. Buehrle vs. Gorzelanny
8. Meche vs. Cain
9. Guthrie vs. Hamels
10. Pettitte vs. Harang

Taken directly from each league's top ten in WHIP, and in order to avoid repeats of teams, I then went to ERA, then Ks. I had to leave out some people who may have been more deserving, such as Jason Marquis, Kelvim Escobar, Chad Gaudin, Rich Hill, and John Maine, but these actually make sense... and do NOT include Matsuzaka.

3 pair Smoltz vs. Haren 5-3

5 pair Young vs. J.Santana 0-8

You think your pairings are any better? Johan Santana and Chris Young? C'mon Chris is good but please. Guthrie and Hamels is a joke too. Washburn and Sheets, Meche and Cain, Beckett and Lilly?

Straight off the WHIP lists. Actually, Guthrie should be higher up, but I had to drop him down to someone with 30 less ERA+ points because he's only had half the starts that Hamels has had. And, actually, if you look at the stats for this year so far, all my pairings are semi-even.

Let's match up them by ERA+:

1. Haren (260) vs. Peavy (263)
2. Beckett (168) vs. Lilly (121)
3. Shields (143) vs. Hudson (146)
4. Santana (131) vs. Young (160)
5. Washburn (130) vs. Sheets (108)
6. Lackey (179) vs. Penny (204)
7. Buehrle (116) vs. Gorzelanny (173)
8. Meche (156) vs. Cain (127)
9. Guthrie (144) vs. Hamels (114)
10. Pettitte (168) vs. Harang (104)

Average difference: 30.9

As opposed to...

1 pair Peavy (263) vs. Beckett (168)
2 pair Penny (204) vs. Lackey (179)
3 pair Smoltz (143) vs. Haren (260)
4 pair Hamels (114) vs. Sabathia (122)
5 pair Young (160) vs. J.Santana (131)
6 pair Maine (142) vs. Verlander (161)
7 pair Oswalt (124) vs. Matsuzaka (92)

Average difference: 46.4

I'd say mine are far better. And if you remove the three worst from mine, to bring them to an equal number, it ends up like this:

Average difference: 20.7 vs. 46.4.

To be fair, we could then remove two more from each, to bring it down to five apiece. It would then become....

Average difference: 16.4 vs. 22.6

And that's just with ERA+. If you want to factor in WHIP, Ks, and other stats, I'd be willing to bet that mine would become significantly closer.
