In an Arizona high school baseball game, a batter hits a 3 run home run over the left field fence. In his excitement he misses first base, which was clearly seen by the base umpire, as well as the visiting coach. Upon appeal he is called out.
My question is how to score this in the book. I scored it a 2 run sac fly, but was told by an AIA umpire that it is scored a home run.
Please advise...:noidea

It's not a home run. I'm not sure if it's a forceout at first or a sac fly. I'm going to guess a forceout with rbi's. If it was a forceout for the third out the runs shouldn't have counted.

Scorekeeper, do I have it right?

No, it's just a put out at first, no hit, no sac fly. A sac fly is a ball that is caught or would have been caught, and a runner or runners score.

I think he does get credit for 2 RBI's though. I'll check with a friend who is an MLB official scorer, and get back to you.

JB .... If there had been two outs in this situation, none of the runs would have counted due to the force out at first ... correct?

Correct. No run can score if the third out is the batter-runner being put out before touching first. Which is what happened here.

This is from the official scorer for the Atlanta Braves;

It is NOT a home run. The BR was retired before reaching 1B. He never reached any base safely, so he is not credited with a hit.

He is also NOT credited with a sac fly. He did not "sacrifice" himself in order to score a teammate. He was not retired on a fly ball to the outfield, so no sac fly.

His out is considered a routine out in the infield, probably 1-3 (assuming the pitcher threw the ball to F3 on the appeal).

He does, however, get credit for two RBIs. The action of him batting the ball is what drove in the runs, so he does get those.

Score the play 1-3, give him 2 RBI, and make a note that the out was on appeal. The last part is not official or necessary, it just helps reconstruct the inning and explain how a batter gets 2 RBI on what appears to be a routine ground out.

Thanks for the wisdom.
It was in fact the 2nd out of the inning, and we went on to beat the region champs soundly 9-3.

Advise that AIA umpire to stick to umpiring, and not scoring.
