Mr. Mathewson wants to know what he did to offend you. He can't be any lower than #2 on the Giants list.

Oops!! Totally forgot about him! Put him in the number two slot followed by Hubbell. Thank-you.

Correction. He can't be lower than #3,
#1/2 Mays/Bonds.

No way Hubbell is better than Matty, let alone Terry better.

Hard to know how to compare pitchers/position players, but
#1. Frank Thomas
#2. Eddie Collins
#3. Big Ed Walsh
Mine is pretty easy.

Honorable mentions include in no particular order
Luke Appling, George Davis, Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox, Minnie Minoso, Harold Baines, Carlton Fisk, Ted Lyons, Robin Ventura, Billy Pierce

Actually, I'd have Kaline 2 and Greenberg 3. Good catch.

While we're at it, Yaz at #3 and Young #2 for the Red Sox keeps bothering me. Wouldn't Clemens be about equal to Young strictly as a Red Sock?

Arky Vaughan would like a word with you. So would Wille Stargell.

I really like the thread, though. Good idea.

I have a really hard time seperating Stargell and Paul Waner. It's almost a tie; I just find Waner a tad better. As for Vaughn, he doesn't cut the top three. Probably like top 10.

Cubs:
1. Mordecai Brown
2. Cap Anson
3. Ernie Banks

there are a lot of hitters that can be on there... Sosa, Billy Williams, Santo, Sandberg... Brown is about the only pitcher who can be in the top 3... maybe pete alexander or jenkins, but both of them played elsewhere a lot though or had their best years elsewhere...

I believe you are talking about guys who played for the specific team the most right or more than half of their career at least??? like for example Pete Alexander, would he be a Phils or Cubs or either one? I would say Phils cuz he had better years with them.

Correction - not everyone considers Bonds to be a "team hero". Mathewson also played all but one game as a Giant, while Bonds was a Pirate for 7 seasons. And it depends how much of a steroid penalty one applies to Barry's syringe... I mean stats. Bonds was an immensely talented ballplayer even prior to the 'roiding, but in absolutely no way could I ever characterize him as a "hero" on any list I create.

I might be in the minority here, but I'm not sure I'd put Kaline in the top 3 for Detroit...amongst Detroit OFers. I love Al Kaline (he's my 6th favorite athlete of all-time in all sports) but I think Cobb (obviously), Crawford, and Heilmann (barely) ahead of Kaline.

As for all Tigers, I have:
1. The Georgie Peach
.
.
.
.
2. The Mechanical Man (Charlie Gehringer)
3. Hank Greenberg
4. Mickey Cochrane
5. Sam Crawford
6. Harry Heilmann
7. Al Kaline
8. Goose Goslin
9. Hal Newhouser
after that I'm having trouble deciding who's next but Bunning, Manush, and Trammell are probably the next 3.

As for managers (not asked, but why not):
1. Hughie Jennings
2. Sparky Anderson

One last thing, looking over some things I'm not really sure if is Heilmann is better than Kaline. Heilmann was a little better offensively (OPS+ and various other #'s are better) but he played less. Kaline also seems to have much better defense.

Red Sox 4-6:
4) Lefty Grove
5) Roger Clemens (as a Red Sock)
6) Sam Rice or Pesky

Next is probably Eckersly as a Red Sock.

No Clemente for pirates?

And I disagree with your Tigers list. Cobb should be #1 and Greenburg or Gehringer shopuld be in there.

Yeah...your right about Clemente, I'll change that. And Gehringer too...but it will have to be a tie.

We had some discussion about this on a thread in the M's forum (http://baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=51540&highlight=hometown+hero) a few months ago. As you can see on that poll, more people feel that Edgar is the "Hometown Hero".

I feel that he should be #1, with Griffey #2. Also, Randy Johnson and Jamie Moyer, the franchises two best pitchers, would like to know why they aren't on the list.

That Lou Gerhigh was one hell of a hitter. Hit them so HIGH.....
