Wasn't Verdell Mathis a batboy prior to playing? I know some pitcher on that late '40's Memphis Red Sox team was.

Let us not forget the exploits of one Leroy "Flapjack" Johnson. Leroy was the batboy for the old Austin Black Senators. "Flapjack" as the players called him was born without a foot at the end of his left leg. Players used to "bone" their bats against the 8 inch hickory stump which was surgically attached to the bottom of his footless leg, as it was considered good luck. Leroy, who was born and raised in a small, segregated Texas town, worked in "black only" restaurants. It was here that he perfected the recipe for buttermilk pancakes that is still used today. At the age of 64 (or so he believes as there are no accurate records of his birth) he was allowed to work in a New Orleans restaurant which was opened to the entire public.
In the late 70's when "Flapjack" met his untimely death in a card game shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, the Baseball Hall of Fame tried to acquire the "boning" stump off his leg for an exhibit. It was denied however by his nephew Nathaniel who was the only living relative to show up to his funeral.
