Today on PTI I was extremely bored, my team's off for a week so I had some time on my hands, and they were blaming Cash for most of our woes. They said things like "He didn't get enough for Sheff and Unit" the Pavano and Wright moves...excuse me but IMO there are a few things that are killing the Yanks:

Eyechart-Under no circumstances should he start when we have a perfectly capable guy like Phelps or even Giambi who hits better as a 1Bmen than a DH (look at the numbers)

The Bullpen-Lots of solid arms, but they're over used and mismanaged. Proctor gets overworked, and it looks like Bruney may suffer the same fate. Also Rivera gets used infrequently and sporadically, and his performace suffers because of it.

The Left Handed Hitters: Bobby Abreu has always been somewhat of a punk IMO, he lacks that fire that Jeter has (critcs say what you want but if you have been watching him you can not deny him)...in Jason Stark's new book (good stuff) he lists Abreu as the 5th most overrated RF saying "he lacks the Derek Jeter gene" Also Damon is clearly hurt and he needs to go on the DL, Eyechart shouldn't even be getting ABs, Robinson Cano needs work with Mattingly or T-Long, and Giambi is slumping too.

Injuries: Okay Cash nor Torre has control over this, I think it was the trainers and we may have gotten it under control. But let me say this you don't lose your best starter last season and replace him with guys who are no better than AA pitchers and win.

Now really none of these are Cash's fault. Now I admit he has made some bad moves (Igawa comes to mind) but I don't think that this is his fault. Your thoughts?

Well Doug Midkkowoskeisuhkudghkjlsdglxbnz is his fault but he has done better lately. To say he should have got more for Johnson and Sheffield is ridiculous. He has no idea what offers he got. I`m amazed they got so much. For Johnson a few years ago coming off a CY caliber year in 2004 the Yankees basically gave up Dioner Navarro and Vazquez. Now a few years later coming off back surgery and a 5 ERA the Diamondbacks gave up Luis Vizcaino, Ross Ohlendorf, Steven Jackson, and Alberto Gonzalez. Considering the different seasons he was coming off the difference in what they gave up is pretty surprising to me when I think about it. For Sheffield he got Humberto Sanchez, Anthony Claggett, and Kevin Whelan. For Bobby Abreu we gave up Matt Smith and a A player or two. Is the difference between Abreu and Sheffield that huge? I don't think so.

I agree with all the points you made about why the team is struggling. Another factor is just plain bad luck.

Ca$h has made a few mistakes and Torre has had his fair share of manangerial blunders. The primary reasons for this seasons struggles are underperforming and just plain bad luck(Anyone else just kinda laugh when Razzle went down? Not at the injury but at the sheer ridiculousness of another pitcher getting taken out?)

I saw the piece on PTI yesterday also and thought they were overly harsh on the offseason trades. It's really too early too tell how those trades will pan out for Yanks. Those trades were positive if for nothing else, because Cashman was able to clear a few mistake signings (Johnson, Pavano, Wright) from the roster and turn them into prospects. Still, I do kind of believe that Cashman may have been able to do better and acquire more ML ready talent, and I also think the team should have done a better job of checking into Sanchez's arm (especially given how bad it's been revealed to be). I also think that while Cashman has done a great job addressing pitching in the farm sytem, he's completely neglected positional players and probably should have acquired at least one viable postional player prospect in those trades. As it stands, the Yankees really don't have a viable positional prospect above the A level, so we're probably at least 2 years away from seeing an impact from anyone. Aquiring Britton for Wright was a great deal IMO, but it's been negated so far as Cashman has kept Britton off the roster. And even though Bobby Abreu is struggling, Cashman made a fantastic deal in acquiring him and he's only under contract through this year anyway.

I do think though that Cashman should show more respect to some of the guys who have got the Yanks there. Posada and Rivera should have been extended before the season, IMO. Two years with them wouldn't have been that risky of commitment. I actually believe that Rivera's contract situation has gotten into his head this year. I really believe that seeing Bernie Williams had a profound effect on Rivera and he's really realizing now that nothing is guaranteed with the Yanks like he thought it was. This was evident to me in spring training when Rivera was much more vocal than usual.

And even though the Clemens signing likely came after a lot of pressure by Steinbrenner, I think it was an ill-advised and panicked signing.

Now the million, or perhaps 30 million dollar question is what will Cashman do with A-Rod. Personally, I don't see how they can let him go as the Yankees will have no power, especially from the right hand side. I also think that the Clemens signing gives A-Rod some more leverage in that it shows how much the Yankees will spend when they are desperate.
