I never really thought about this for some reason, but can someone tell me what player's image is featured in the Major League Baseball logo? Or is it just a generic depiction?

I think there was a really old thread where someone said that the player is Harmon Killebrew. Can anyone help here?

I don't know who it is, but he's looking at a lousy pitch!

VT,
In all seriousness, I looked into this a bit and I do believe that it is Harmon Killebrew featured. Now we need to find out which pitcher threw that horrible ball :)

Reportedly, the MLB logo was PATTERNED after Killebrew, but is not exactly copied from him (unlike the NBA logo, which is a precise silhouette of Jerry West).
And given that the ball in the logo seems headed for the batter's head, and Killebrew's career started in the late '50s, I'd guess the pitcher was Early Wynn or Jack Hamilton.

I'm not sure where all this Killebrew stuff is coming from. I believe the image is one of a young Pete Rose, circa 1963.

I've always assumed it was Killer Killebrew; and I'm fairly certain it could not have been Yaz or Rose. Yaz held the bat nearly vertically, and if I remember correctly kept his feet way too close together to imitate as a young player. Rose held the bat nearly horizontally in an extremely low crouch, so the ball coming at his head might still be in the strike zone, but his bat position is all wrong for the logo. Might want to check out the logo on the International League ball. The batter is in a classic stance, at three-quarters view, portrayed from the letters up, and instead of an approaching ball, he is framed by four five-pointed stars. Mike Piazza in '92 comes to mind.

How ironic would it be if the logo for Major League Baseball featured an image of Pete Rose. I think if that was the case, MLB would've redone the logo by now...You know how they love good ol' Charlie Hustle :)

I have always been told and read that the logo was patterned after Pete Rose.

Well, the profile certainly sort of RESEMBLES Pete Rose.
Seeming that the guy on the logo looks like he's about to get hit by that pitch, maybe Ron Hunt posed for the logo!

Again sorry for reviving a stone age thread, but I really need the answer, maybe you guys can help.
Thanks, Scout

Thank You Elvis. So from 1969 every MLB team wore the MLB logo on the back of the hats right?

No, that wes regarding the urban legend about Killebrew. I think the hat thing started in the late 90s, but that's just a guess. I'll try and find out more.

So before 1969.... was there a logo for MLB? Or were they just considered the NL & the AL?
