I think the reason there's so few nicknames on the Brewers is that it's such a young core group of guys, no time for nicknames to develop yet. Plus, the young guys already have good enough "nicknames". J.J. Hardy ... J.J. is good enough, and Prince Fielder ... I don't have to explain that. ;)

Paul Lo Duca=Captain Red A**
Ramon Castro has been called "The Head" simply because he has a huge head.
Jose Valentin="The 'Stache" or "Moustache Man"
Jose Reyes, while lacking in a nickname, has his own chant. I've heard him called "The Sparkplug," though it's never stuck.
David Wright was "Golden Boy" in the offseason.
Moises Alou=Mo.
Shawn Green=Greenie
Julio Franco=Met-thusla (I like that one.)
Tom Glavine=Glav
Orlando Hernandez=El Duque (easily one of the best nicknames in baseball)
John Maine=Battleship (a bit Chris Bermanish, but with his recent performances, it fits!)
Oliver Perez=Jekyll & Hyde, alternately (by Gary Cohen) "The Pride of Culiacan" (In Mexico where he grew up...nice old fashioned nickname.), alternately "Ollie the Braves Killer."
Mike Pelfrey=Pelf, or "The Elf" (which is rather odd, considering he's 6'7").
Ambiorix Burgos=One a Day (Keith Hernandez thought his name sounded like a prescription drug)
Joe Smith=Mighty Joe (Dunno if that caught on, but they were trying to give it to him.)
Billy Wagner=The Hammer (puts the final nail in the coffin). Was known as "Billy the Kid" with the Astros, or at least in the Minors, because of his proficiency with a revolver.
Pedro Martinez is just "Pedro."
Pedro Feliciano is "Little Pedro"
Juan Padilla, if he ever comes back, was known as "Goggles."
Duaner Sanchez's nickname was originally "Dirty." Then someone figured out that that was reference to a horribly perverse sex act, and he's become "Filthy."
Lastings Milledge was known as "Lastin' Lastings" for a while. Dunno why.
Fernando Martinez seems to have become "F-Mart" (please drop that one).

:laugh :laugh I find Canada to be the exact opposite. If he played for the Blue Jays, he'd be Kevin Millarrrhh matey. I have a friend from South Africa who insists we Canadians all pound like pirates. I never noticed until he brought it up.

The trouble with most modern nicknames is that they aren't nicknames at all -- they're abbreviations. Aside from "Big Unit", "Big Hurt", "Big Papi" (Hmmm I see a trend) and perhaps "D-Train", most (not all, but most) of the names are just abbreviations and diminutives. Where are the great names like "Oil Can" and "Death to Flying Things" and "Bird" and so on? Now we're stuck with cute diminutives like "Miggy" and "Huddie".
In the book Faithful, Stephen King called Schilling "Father Curt." That seemed pretty apt.

^^ agree.
or like stretching out a player's 5-letter name to 10 letters.
russ davis was once introduced as the next batter by a little kid (during san francisco giants ongoing promotion) as "roose" davis.
it stuck immediately as giants players and fans used "roose" for the next 4 months.
that's a nickname.

Do I even want to know why Pauly is called that? I saw it on a SI cover last year, and I thought that they were making fun of the Mets. If the reason is X rated I DO NOT want to know then.

Actually, it was sorta complimentary. Billy Wagner gave it to him because "he plays like he has a fire lit under his behind."

Before this year, Brad Lidge was known as "Lights Out Lidge". Minute Maid would even turn out the lights as he would run in from the bull pen; however, lately it's more like..."Launch It Lidge" (and the lights stay on!)

Am I the only one who thinks baseball nicknames suck these days when compared to the old nicknames? A lot of nicknames now are of the "first letter of the first name, first syllable of the last name" variety.
I used to see Coco Crisp playing a lot with the Johnson City Cardinals in the Appalachian League. I remember a little blurb in the program that year that said his grandmother gave him that nickname when he was a little baby. He played on the same team as a guy named Santo De Los Santos. When the announcer said his name, the crowd would go crazy. Not because Santo was a great player, but because we loved the name.

Like Spaceman, or Rooster.
Some still have nicknames like that though. Like Carlos Lee with "El Caballo", that may be one of the only ones though.

Cubs abbreviated names... not quite in the category of nicknames:
- Aramis Ramirez: Rammy (pronounced Rah-mee)
- Derrek Lee: D Lee
- Ryan "The Riot" Theriot
- Angel Guzman: Goozy
- Alfonso Soriano: Fonzy or Sori
- Carlos Zambrano: Z Unit, El Toro, Big Z, or just plain Z
- Ronny Cedeno: Ron Ce (referencing the former Cubs player Ron Cey)
- Ryan Dempster: Demp, or when he's blowing games, Dumpster
- Henry Blanco: Hank White
El Toro for Zambrano is pretty original, similar to El Caballo for Carlos Lee.
I'm sure there are more.

Orlando Hernandez=El Duque (easily one of the best nicknames in baseball)
He actualy inherited that nickname from his father, who was the original Duque back in Cuba.................Adrian Hernandez(who is also a Cuban defector) and had a cup of coffee with the Yankees and the Brewers was called El Duquecito because of his similar pitching style:

"Adrian Hernandez(who is also a Cuban defector) and had a cup of coffee with the Yankees and the Brewers was called El Duquecito because of his similar pitching style"
I remember that guy! The Yankees made him out to be the next great starting pitcher, and for whatever reason he just never panned out. Some more nicknames for the Mets...
Scott Schoeneweis..."Scho" or "The Big Scho"
Carlos Gomez..."The Kid" (Another Keith Hernandez creation...Gomez was referred to as "Carlos Gomez" precisely FIVE TIMES by Keith, and the rest of the time he's "The Kid." If this were any decade except the 1990's or 2000's, I'm sure he'd be "Kid Gomez" from here on...)
Pedro Feliciano..."Wild Thing" (This is, of over 150 nicknames I've come up with, the only one that has caught on at ANY level. The Met fans at my high school call Feliciano the "Wild Thing," as do several cardshop owners where I buy baseball cards. It's a testament to Feliciano's good pitching despite his high walk ratio.)

I already did the Jays. I forgot about Wells though.Ya, not too many good nicknames for the Jays.
I think that it's a general reflection of the changes in baseball and society. Alot of ballplayers are private, and their actions are not known. Most nicknames come from a funny incident that happens with the team, and overall that doesn't happen much anymore (maybe because there are no longer bus and train road trips).
My personal favourite nickname is a buddy of mine's. At the batting cages, he fouled a ball off the end of the bat, off a pole, and right back into... you know where. He was on the ground for 5 minutes, just groaning.
His last name is Bauer, so eventually the nickname "One-ball Bauer" just stuck... :laugh
