Im in a slump and my coach is getting mad at me for it. Im working harder than everyone else in Practice while they are screwing around and he doesnt yell at them, but i cant get a hit and he yells at me. Im trying so hard but i just cant do it in the game, i get all tense and nervous.

Im batting .071, or 1-14. Sometimes, i just try to make a joke outta it and today i did jokingly, and he yelled at me and so did some of the sophomores(im a frosh) so yeah now im really mad and trying hard.

Of my swing?

Well lets say its a mix between Albert Pujols and David Wright. Im open, but lower than wright. I have a wider stance and im bent over. However, i keep my elbow very low to make sure im not popping it up.

Sounds like a mental approach and pressure thing to me. This article might help you deal with it. Keep in mind, the attitudes suggested in this article are private thoughts in your own head, not things to be communicated to coaches and team mates. http://www.webball.com/cms/page3400.cfm

No offense, but the attitude you take in the first post may be some of the reason why your coach is mad. "I'm working harder than everyone else but they don't get in trouble and I do" it a really poor attitude to take considering it's a team game.

Just focus and work hard everyday. Joking is a bad idea if your not doing well, it'd be like a surgeon making a joke because he accidentaly did an operation on the wrong person, not cool.

Well, see what else am i supposed to do. Its in the past and it was in a very non formal situation, in the locker room after practice. I mean come on now.

Its true though, half the guys on my team just screw around. It just gets on my nerves. Im not sayin their bad teammates, it just bugs me cuz everything comes so natural while im workin as hard as i can to keep up, while they screw around but still do better than me.

The coach yelled at me, while my teammates were making funna me, and i just kinda joked about it.

Then you shouldn't be 1-14. How about being the first "you." Start by relaxing.

Are you hitting the ball hard or are they crappy hits? Are you taking extra batting practice? Have you been a good hitter in the past? post some video. How do you know you are working harder, your opinion? You might not be batting much longer.

Well yeah i know im working hard, every week our teachers at our school hand out "tiger recognition" cards. For good students and athletes.

My coach gave me one that said. "THank you for working hard in practice. Your effort has been very good and you seem to be progressing, keep it up!" thats word for word too.

Yes, i stayed later today for BP.

I'll post video tomorrow. I need to video tape in the first place.

And my only basehit is a tripple to Right Center field.

I have a kid on the team I coach that puts that pressure on himself. No coach yells at him at all. I wouldn't put up with that. His dad is trying his best to help but the kid just self implodes. The kid is in a major slump and was our lead off hitter. Now batting 2nd because he has speed. Last weekend his error at SS affected his bat. He was trying so hard to hit the ball he was swinging at anything.

After the first game I took him to the side and told him a story about one of my coaches in HS. I was in a slump and couldnt hit the ball out of the infield. Coach told me when I forget about everything. Like the slump/the ribbing/the topping of all the pitches/etc. I will be ready to hit. At the time I was thinking yea right. But he was right!

If your worried about everything other then just the pitcher and ball. Then your behind in the count. Take something from your team mates. They look and act relax because they are. Block everything from your mind except the ball and pitcher. Think hit everything back towards the pitcher. When you take BP think up the middle. Nothing but pitcher and ball. Video would help but mental approach is very important. sounds to me you might be taking yourself out of the at bat.

My coach says he gets on to us because he likes us and knows we can play better then we are at the time, maybe thats whats going on.

Getting on the team for not playing like a team. Ok. But on individual for not hitting or errors. That IMO is bad. No one wants to do there best, more then a player. When you take the pressure off your self then you will have success IMO. RELAX and let your training take over.

juniesky, take a good serious look at;
Block everything from your mind except the ball and pitcher. Think hit everything back towards the pitcher. When you take BP think up the middle. Nothing but pitcher and ball.
Mike

And I have questions for you about just what are you seeing as you watch an incoming pitch.. and more precisely What you see When during its flight?
Do you see it at release?
follow it in?
how far in? then what?
Do you hold your eyes level?
Most important,
1. is it a smooth or rough passage that you see?
2. Having trouble distinguishing the ball from ground behind it?

But on individual for not hitting or errors. That IMO is bad.

I guess we just defer in opinions then, because I just call that coaching. Sometimes that's all it takes to straighten out a hitch in a swing or problems fielding. Maybe I should ask what level of ball you're talking about? Sure it's not okay in Little League, but the higher up you go the more acceptable it is. Example, my coach got onto a hitter tonight at our game for uppercutting at the ball and has him go do some soft toss, next at bat the hitter goes out and hits a backspin line drive.

Slumps happen. The way to become a better player is to show how well you can deal with it, and it seems to me that you're taking the right approach.

First of all the only way you can play well is to play relaxed. Don't feel like you need to get a hit every time. Work on your technique during BP, when it comes to the game, stay loose, joke with your teammates (not too much), and just try and hit the ball hard up at the plate.

You're 1-14, but you've shown you can hit with that triple. Sooner or later you're going to go 3-4, but not until you realize that slumps happen to everyone and the only way that you're going to get out of it is respond to it positively. Keep working hard in practice, don't show up your teammates, but keep on doing what you're doing.

Pick a pitch location slightly down and in the middle of the plate. Get your hands back and foot down looking there for a FB on every pitch. Drive the ball back from whence it came hard and run.

At 1 for 14 it is unlikely they open you with breaking balls and pitch you very hard right now.

See...I am teaching you to lighten up and laugh...........:clapping

If your coach is yelling at you, I would assume that you are not hitting the ball well. Most coaches know that if you are hitting the ball hard, but just bad luck keeps you from getting a hit.
Maybe its the curve or off speed that is messing with you. Just move up in the box and eliminate the pitch. Biggio does it.

I watched Cal Ripken Jr. talking about a pitcher who gave him fits. He said he honestly had no idea how to hit the guy. He was something like 1-21 against him. He was on deck and his coach saw that he was nervouse about his next at bat. He told his coach how he had no idea what to do against the guy and everything he had done to this point had not worked. Expecting words of wisdom from his coach he got, "now would be a good time to try something different." He said that's when all of his crazy stance changing started. I'm not saying you should start rebuilding or changing things, just losen up. What better time than 1-14 to try something new. Can't hurt.

Now go out and MASH kid. Good luck!!

Here is what i tell my boy.

Look for the prettiest girl in the stands and caught her eye and grin or wave at her.

You just made contact and loosened up mentally at the same time. At least you are on a positive track.

good luck

Try bunting. A triple usually means you are fast. I tis a good way to see the ball and have a chance. Are you striking out more or are you hitting weak hits?
