My 11YO son has an average throwing arm; good velocity but so-so accuracy. When he misses, it's wide to my right, his left (he's right handed). This is just normal throwing, and not pitching. At the risk of oversimplification, is there a typical reason for that, i.e. release too early or too late, not coming over the top, etc?
I would like to give him some pointers, but am at a loss on how to correct this.

Without a video of his throw, it is a crapshoot. It could be lots of things.

I agree with this, but if I HAD to guess, it would be hes not throwing over the top.

He may be flying open with his glove.
Does he finish with his glove at his glove side pec or out to the side?
Flying open with the glove can cause the arm slot to drop and make it look like he's throwing a pretty flat sidearm.

Some things that could be wrong:
He may not be stepping towards the target. He may not have his lead arm pointed towards the target. He may not be balanced in the shoulders. He may be dropping his elbow. He may be dragging his elbow and slinging the ball. Given the balls are going left, chances are one of these things are causing him to throw across his body. Releasing early or late usually creates throwing high or low.
