View Full Version : How does your own team fare?

I thought it might be a nice idea to follow your own team during this season.

What I mean is, if you play yourself, how is your team playing during this season?

I will start.

I play at the Stags in Etten-Leur, The Netherlands. My team is playing in the fifth division of our province Noord Brabant.

Today we had our first match, a road game at Tilburg. The opponent had a lot of new guys in their team, so we beat them easily 6-20. Two remarkable feats:

One of the opponent's players, only played his first game ever. In his first at bat he hit the ball for a line drive triple to center field. Unbelievable.

Second remarkable feat: One of my team mates who played center field made a great sliding catch (with a capital C) and threw the runner out at first base.

So how did your team play this week?

Interesting topic. I like it. My teams are the St. Louis Monarchs (www.stlouismonarchs.com). We are currently experiencing a little weather and have not played yet. Our first games might actually happen on April 20.

I'm playing on a church softball team. First practice is today and I have no clue what position I'll play. But I'm probably like Ryan Freel and get placed in every position.

Kind of the same thing here. When I played before, I played CF. Then I was out the next year with a broken arm and now I have no preference as to where I play. I'm sure I'll find the right position.

As for my team, I've missed the last two training sessions because I was on holiday so I'm a little out of the loop at the moment but hopefully we'll have a game soon.

In my younger years, I almost played every position. Most of the time I was a catcher, because nobody else could or wanted to do it. I also played a lot of outfield.

But with this team, there are two other guys who are better catchers than I am. Now I am playing left field.

BTW. I hit .333 today. First at bat a K. Second at bat a hit through the infield and third at bat a dribbler along third base line, which the third baseman scooped, so he could throw me out at first.

My softball teams website (http://basherssoftball.blogspot.com/)

We're entering our 14th year of playing mens league softball in Arlington, VA. Just finished the Early Bird Tournament yesterday. We didn't hit at all, but still went 3-2 in double elimination, making it to the championship game for our bracket. My legs felt like I'd been beaten with a rubber hose after 5+ hours of ball. Our regular season opens Wednesday night.

My team hasnt played yet. Opening day was last week. I play mostly catcher.

I hate the ruleset, it has 2 different lineups(one offense, one defense), and due to the fact that its a pay for play league, you cant always get the people that deserve to be in both, in both.

The weather has been horrible in the Northeast so far this season. My high school JV baseball team is 2-1 and we have had around 3-5 games cancelled because of the weather. I don't know the exact amount because I sort of stopped counting. Our one loss was against a good team so I give them credit but for whatever reason we brought down a varsity pitcher who is not as good as any of the JV pitchers to start for us. He is on varsity because of his age. We lost 6-2 and this pitcher gave up 5 runs in 4 innings. I think they brought him down to get some playing time in because I don't think he gets in much on varsity. But anyway I think we could've done better with one of our own guys.

We have a tournament in Dublin in early May which will be our first competitive action of the year. My coach told me today that I will be playing third base... or shortstop... or centrefield so I still have no definite position. We also had some pitching tryouts and I decided I might as well give it a go. Although I hit the batter with a pitch but overall I did okay so I could add pitcher to the list of possible positions.

Bashers blew chunks in their season opener, being swept by the Fighting Penguins, 13-6 and 11-9. The only thing colder than the weather was our bats.
It's finally supposed to be warm this week, so we'll get back out there and try to even the record...

Rec league baseball, baby!

I play first base. Probably because I'm big, though I've made two official errors so far and another really dumb play and one more play where I should have been charged with an error, but the catcher went and got the ball and threw the guy out. We've played four games so far and we're 4-0. I've only played in three of them, and the one I missed was due to my brother having mono and my mom not wanting me to go. I guess the only reason I start is because I've been hitting REALLY well. I hit one HR that was unofficially measured at 380 feet, two doubles, and three singles. Oh, and I've walked twice. Still haven't gotten out. So... my BA is 1.000, my SLG is 11/6, and my OBP is 1.000. So my OPS is 17/6. I LOVE rec league.

Yesterday my team did play it's second game of the season. I wasn't there. I had a weekend off. (Scouted some talent in Belgium ;) ).

My team had it's first homegame and beat our opponents 6-10.

We are tied for first place with Tilburg, but have scored one more run, so we are at first place in the standings. :dance

Today we won our third straight game 25-3. Last year we were beaten by them 13-12.

We all (except one) had one basehit at least. I had a single on a fly ball to left field with two RBI's. Later I reached first on a fielder's choice but batted in one more run.

Our short stop made a great play. One of the opponent's players hit a line drive a little right of our short stop. He dove to the ball but was not able to catch it. He could stop the ball though. Because of that the runner from second hesitated for a while and because of that, our short stop could, sitting on his knees, throw the ball to third for the force out. The runner from first was so kind to run passed second base so we caught him in a run down for the second out of that inning.

Last week we shared first place with two other teams. One of them was this team. I don't know what the other team did. But we are still in first place.

Funny how things can go. Last year we were nearly a cellar dwellar, but this year we seem to be a contender for the title of our division.

It looks like I might end up starting on the mound for the tournament in a week after a cruel twist of fate injured our no.1 (he broke his arm at the skate park that was built as part of the complex the diamond was built in) and our backup has another engagement so I was the one left with the responsibility for my first real game since I broke my own arm over a year ago. Hopefully I can do a good enough job at back up for the back up.

Today we had a practice game so we wouldn't be too rusty for next week. I started on the mound and let's just say the first inning wasn't what you'd call brilliant with me walking the majority of the batters I faced but I got more into it as the game went on even getting a few strikeouts along the way. I was still a little inconsistant though. But I made up for my less than perfect pitching with a nice piece of clutch hitting as I struck a line drive into centre field with two out scoring the man on third to win the game and to cap a seven run rally.

It sounds to me that you are not pitching on a regular basis. So you can't blame yourself.

That was pretty much the first time I had faced batters in a game situation so I'm sure I can improve and work out the kinks (mainly mental) in time.

Today we played our region rivals Jeka from Breda.

After the first inning we were trailing 5-0. The were beating up our starting pitcher.

In the second we managed to do something back. With the bases loaded the runner on third managed to steal home plate :dance

After the third we trailed 8-3. To be honest I didn't think by then we could get even. But we did.

In the fifth inning we managed to score five more runs. The opponent's pitcher was shaky as soon as we got runners on base.

The final score was 8-8. At our level we don't have extra innings.

I think we may be quite satisfied with the result, especially after trailing with five runs.

I had the game of my life last night. We were trailing 9-4 going into the seventh and final inning. Then their pitcher allowed the first five hitters to reach base, walking in a run and making the score 9-5. The next hitter struck out, the next walked, making the score 9-6 with the bases loaded. I was up next. So far I had walked twice. I took two out of the zone, fouled off a pitch up and in, and then stroked one into the right-center field gap. The runners on second and third scored easily, and the runner on third came in when their RFer overthrew the cutoff man. I had rounded second and was trying to get back when the pitcher came up with the ball and rifled it to second. Unfortunately, nobody was covering, and I was able to score standing up as the ball went into CF. They then put in a reliever and he struck out the next two hitters, and our pitcher shut them down in their half of the seventh, so we won 10-9.

We played in a tournament in Dublin. There were four teams including ours competing. Because there were games in total to be played the games only lasted two innings each. The other teams were from Cavan, Kerry and Portstwart in Derry. We played Cavan first and was on the mound. I got 5 strikeouts and made the assist for the other out meaning I was entirety of our defense for that game allowing no hits and four base on balls, two in each inning. We won the game 5-0. Our next one was against probably our closest rivals from Kerry. I played centre field for this one and in stark contrast to the first game I didn't once have a touch of the ball. We won that one 12-3in a a game we really hit well in this game reaching the run limit of six in each inning. We played our final game three and a half hours later because of some bad timekeeping by the ump and general game holdups. This was against Portstewart. I once again played CF and only had to deal with two hits up the middle that I couldn't make any play on. I was called out on a close play at the plate that ended the top of the second with us up just 7-3 but some nice fielding and solid pitching stopped anymore runs from scoring leaving a 7-3 scoreline.

Today we played our fifth game of the season, away at Seven Hills. This team is the cellar dweller of our competition.

We won 14-3. Even though the final score may make you think that it was a piece of cake, it wasn't. Almost everyone of my team was trying to hit the long ball. But that didn't work. We only collected 8 hits (!). The opponents players commited eight errors over five innings.

IMO opinion our pitcher was the games MVP. He pitched 5 innings, allowed only three hits, walked none and our field commited three errors. Our pitcher fielded a couple of hits and threw them towards second. Twice the batters were called safe (in my opinion they were out), otherwise we would have made two double plays.

We have played five games so far. We won four and have one tie.

Next week we play the leading team UVV from Utrecht.

Yankeebiscuitfan

Today we suffered our first loss of the season. Our oponent, UVV from Utrecht, contains a lot of former Dutch Major Leaguers, who are only playing for fun.

Until the fifth ining we could keep pace with them. We even were in the lead a couple of times.

But in the fifth our team collapsed. It started with a throwing error by our second baseman. Instead of stepping on second himself, he tossed the ball passed our short stop. Then with the bases loaded, the ball was hit to our short stop. No body went to their base so he couldn't throw the ball to any of them.

The final score was 11-7. It is ashame that we had a bad last inning (we play two hours instead of nine innings). But except this bad last inning, I think we can be proud on what we did today.

Today we suffered our second loss of the season. In the first inning, our starting pitcher had a lot of troubles in finding his control. When he threw strikes he was hit badly, or the umpire didn't call them. At our level the home team has to deliver an umpire. And you may guess that in some cases this umpire will call in favour of the home team. In this case it wasn't even necessary, because they were clearly better than us.

In the first inning we were touched for seven runs.

We lost the game 12-7.

I hit 1 for 2 (infield hit toward second base) and caught two fly balls in right field. With one fly ball I was quite lucky. The ball was in front of me when I tried to catch it. It landed on the palm of my left hand and rolled over my arm towards my body, so I could control it. :dance

Today we suffered our third straight loss, a totally unnecessary one. We played against a team that is in the cellar of our division.

In the second inning, with two outs, we scored eight runs. The pitcher of our opponent threw a 35 mph (!) fast ball (at least that is my rought estimation of the speed). Most of my team mates had some trouble in hitting the ball properly, because of it's speed.

After five innings, they started to hit our pitcher. Our reliever couldn't close the door either, so they took the lead (12-8). In the end we came one run short to tie the game, so we lost 12-11.

Like I said, totally unnecessary. After we scored the eight runs, most of our batters took it very lighthearted and tried to hit every ball that was near the strike zone. So in the end we can only blame ourselves.

For the change, I hit 3-4(two singles and a double), had one RBI and stole two bases. :dance My BA jumped to .462.

After a very rough first three weeks (1-4-1), the Bashers have won six straight to raise their record to 7-4-1. The bats have started to wake up a bit, the pitching has been very good, and the defense is at times fantastic. With six games to go, I'm feeling pretty good about our team.

My team finished the regular season 8-4, in second place, finishing the season with a loss after a five-game winning streak. We won our first playoff game 17-2 against a team that had beaten us 4-2 just three days earlier. I went 2-2 with two doubles, a walk, and a sac fly. My second-inning double was my first hit in three weeks, ever since we faced a pitcher who threw no more than 30 on his fastball and I slowed down my swing to hit it.

We've got another game tonight against the team with the 30-mph pitcher. I'll let you guys know how it goes!

We finally won one again. We played home vs a student team from Nijmegen.

I must say, a bunch of arrogant pricks. Most of the game we were playing against ourselves. Like earlier games, a lot of my team mates were hitting for the long ball on a pitcher that didn't top the 40 mph. Half way we were trailing 3-6.

But after some positional changes, things turned around and we finally won 14-7.

I don't know what is happening to me this season. I hit .667 today, to raise my BA to .500. :dance :dance :dance :hyper:

This is the problem with Irish baseball at my level. We haven't played a competitive game against another team since the tournament in which we won all three of our games. Aparently a few years ago there were enough teams in the Dublin region to have a league but there didn't seem to be enough interest and the teams just dissapeared.

The only plans for our team is a trip to Kerry in the near future but that hasn't even been confirmed.

After a scornful defeat last week (4-20), we played our local rivals Jeka from Breda this morning.

After the first inning we were leading 5-0 thanks to five hits and four errors.

It was a close game in which we kept the lead but were our oponent fought hard to get back.

A five run fifth inning secured our win.

In the sixth we scored one security run.

The final score was Jeka 9 - The Stags 12.

I batted 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI's and raised my BA back to .500 again. :dance

This time we lost 33-22 (if I did the math right) in 7 innings :crazy Our pitcher had to leave early after being hit by a line drive, but "only" sprained a leg. I went 2-4 with a walk and a strikeout.

After that we played an exhibition game. I did a Spiezio and pitched the first inning :)
