I have a Joe Borowski autographed MLB baseball......

How much is it worth?

How much is a plain MLB baseball worth.

Yes I know its a piece of crap I won it for selling the most in a fundraiser back when he was the cubs closer.

Can a mod move this to memorabilia?

It's worth is probably zero to none.

It's got to be worth at least 7-10$. To someone.

If he were to get it appraised by a company... he would get hardly any $ for it.

I think him signing it actually made it worth less.

It's worth whatever someone will play for it. You really don't think he could find buyers in the $7-10 range?

No. Personally I don't. Borowski has been with 7 teams in 11 seasons. And he isn't exactly a "lights out" closer. After all ; he only has 80 career saves.
But whatever... what do I know... right?

I don't mean this as an insult or anything, but I'll give you 5 bucks for it. PM me if you don't get any better offers for it.

But then again, he's a major league baseball player and some people like to get autographs of major league baseball players whether they are "stars" or not.

I don't know. What do you know?

This leads me to ask a question I planned on asking. How many of you would pay for an autograph? I can understand buying an autographed ball but would you send a ball along with money to get it signed? Something about paying for autographs doesn't seem right to me.

Well your absolutely correct. My whole point being is that he isn't a HOF caliber player, and for the author of this thread (if he planned on selling it) shouldn't expect to earn $50 (an example) from selling it.
What do I know? Hell, I have been collecting autographs IP & TTM for the last 20 yrs, so I would hope that I know something about the hobby.
NOW... on the topic for paying for autographs. Bob Feller was at a card show in PA a few weeks back... my brother paid $25 for Mr Feller to sign 4 baseball cards and get a personalized 8x10 for me. To me that is worth paying for.

I forgot what I was going to say to this earlier... but now I remember.
Write to former Brookly Dodger hurler Johnny Podres and ask him to sign a card for you. He will type a letter back explaining why he charges $5 per card for him to sign it. He will explain the fact that people sell his autograph on eBay. eBay has ruined it all. People write to players and request an autograph, Joe Schmo the player signs the ball/card what have you... , sends it back to the "fan". A few days later the signed ball is on ebay for $100. The (ex)player in my opinion had just gotten "screwed". Alot of folks are making a profit from the hobby. And it ruins it all for true collectors.
Just my 2 cents worth. :twocents:

I see what you're saying. I agree.

LOL I didn't say you didn't know anything; I asked what you do know. But of course, if you've been doing it for 20 years you would definitely know a lot.

That's cool that your brother got those for you. Something just doesn't seem right to me though about paying for it. Granted, athletes are famous, but they're people too just like us. Maybe it's better to pay if you're getting the autographs for someone else.

I think it's ok to make a donation for autographs. But I agree with the rest of your post as well. I guess if people wouldn't make profits off of the hobby players wouldn't be as reluctant to sign. I believe those types of people are ruining it for all true collectors too. I think we shouldn't have to pay for autographs but then again, I think it's ethically disgusting to ask a player for his autograph, have him take the time to do it, and then turn around and sell it.

Write him a letter. It's quite simple... you can get his auto for free.

I would NEVER buy an autograph from eBay. The risk of it being a fake is quite high.

I am still learning about all this stuff but I vaguely remember hearing about a "COA" or something like that. That is valid authentication I heard.

Anyone can issue their own COA. It means very little unless it's issued by the right people.

That is why I said I am still learning about all this stuff. That said, shouldn't it only BE issued by the right people when said object is proven to be genuine? If not, what the hell good are they?

Any eBay seller can just print off a piece of paper that reads "Certificate of Authentication: This ______ (item) was autographed by ______ (player) and is guaranteed to be authentic."

The legit authenticators do only issue COAs after expert review of the autographed item (PSA/DNA for example).

Some eBay sellers offer a refund if you send in your item for authentication and it is deemed fake or not authentic, but then you've just wasted the money seeing if the item was real, and you won't get refunded for that.

So yes, the best idea is to just stay away from eBay if purchasing autographs, but if you must, make sure they're authenticated by a reputable company.
