Who here keeps score when they attend a ballgame. I think it's kind of a lost art.
Also, I know I'll never score for a MLB team or anything, but does anyone know how colleges (UCLA for example) choose their scorekeepers?

I get to Fenway maybe five times a year, tops. It's impossible to score a game there. When I am listening to the radio, I try to score. I'd be interested in which scoring sheets people like and how they have adapted them for themselves. Perhaps a thread on how to score, with sheets, would be interesting. Remy, Boston broadcaster, sells copies of his score sheets.

I usually keep score with a scorecard I created on Excel, I would post it if I could upload Excel files.

At my younger brother's games I do, and when playing Strat-O-Matic, but I don't like scoring at games, while watching them, or while listening.

I buy those books with scoresheets in them. The scoresheets I use allow you to keep track of pitches and all that, too. I add a couple of other things like backwards numbers for a strike looking, a little tick mark on a foul ball so I can tell the difference between a swing and miss and a foul. I've also recently began writing a C if the catcher visits the mound or an M if the manager/pitching coach does. I also use a / for a PO throw to 1st (it's sort of pointing that way) a | for a PO to 2nd, and a \ for a PO to 3rd.
Sometimes (although not usually) I'll keep track of whether the batter bats L or R....I always keep track of what arm the pitcher uses, though. I also write down the OF dimensions and the names of the umpires so that when people yell "come on blue" I could remind them of the guys name (although I've never actually done that).
Also, keeping score is kind of fun. On occasion old people will talk to me and be pretty impressed that a kid my age (I'm 19....20 in 8 days) knows how to keep score. It also allows you to see if a pitcher is throwing first pitch strikes, how batters are doing, and a lot of other things you wouldn't notice if you were just watching the game.

I keep a scoresheet that I devised myself. Not only to keep track of the game, but I also keep the batting stats for the message board operator for the High Desert Mavericks, Class (Upper) A, California League. And for good measure, I cover the team, and the local high schools and community college, for a local weekly newspaper chain.

I scored a few when I was a kid, but I found I would blink and miss something and in trying to find out what is was I missed, I kept missing even more. :crazy

I used to do it watching games when I was a teenager. On tv that is. It was fun but I just lost interest in it. I actually did it not to long ago just cause I hadn't did it in so long during a game I played on playstation. I would never do it at a real game live because so much is going around and more chance of missing something. Plus, I'd miss stuff when I had to go to the bathroom or get something to eat.

Personally I like to just relax while watching or listening to a game, plus now-a-days you can hop online and get the whole thing anyways.:D

Oddly enough, I started because I kept missing things. Helps keep me focused on whats going on. Helps to take someone with you to run to concessions.
If they can run to the bathroom for ya, they're a better man than I am!!!! :faint: :laugh

Who is the printer of the sheets you use?

I went to the Columbus Clippers minor-league game today. I arrived late, at the top of the 2nd, but if I'd gotten there on time I was going to score. And I'm 18, and score ball games, and am proud to be rare. I just wish I weren't.

I'm not exactly sure how to do it though.

Speaking of keeping score - there is a new pro independent league starting next month in Dallas, TX. I'm going to keep score/stats for the Lewisville team and I need to find a backup or someone to split the games with!
If anyone is local and interested, please contact me at dan_nichols @ hotmail . com
I'm guessing the other 3 (initial) teams might have needs also. See

We're using TAS for scoring software.

I bought a nice quality scorebook at a sporting goods store many years ago, and it really makes it so much easier to score a game. Plus I tought my wife how to do it, and she enjoys the process too.

i have more than 3 decades of scorebooks that i cherish.
16 seasons ago i determined the store-bought ones crummy and totally lacking and have made my own since. for the past 8 seasons i have used illustrator and photoshop to make 'em. they're pretty sweet, if i don't say so myself.

Sometimes.
My girlfriend keeps score, so sometimes we'll split up scoring the game. I generally don't do it anymore, though I did all the time when I was younger.
When I was working for MLB/MILB, I was scoring usually somewhere between 3-6 games a day, and sometimes up to 4 at a time. So, I appreciate just being able to relax and put back a (few) cold one(s) and enjoy the game. But when I go to playoff games or something, I'll score for posterity.
In Oakland, they tried to charge my girlfriend for a one of those stunted mini-gold pencils. Talk about ballsy!
It used to be fun, but as the years went by I got less interested. With the exception of playoff or landmark games, I don't think I'd be interested in keeping a scorecard again. Like others have said, it's easy to get the info online, plus it's nice to relax and/or wander the stadium throughout a game.

My file is too big to upload, I put it on paint and tried. I'd be glad to e-mail it, just PM me your e-mail address.
