While i am currently attempting to collect a set of the 1909 t206 cards (an obvious life long challenge) i am interested in starting the TTM process... but i do have several questions... I would love to hear everyones opinions / answers of the following (and thanks for taking the time to probably repeat yourself for the 10th time)...

1. TTM = through the mail ?

2. Where do you get the information on where and when to send the requests?

3. Lets assume i want to have baseball cards signed, do i send another self-addressed envelope with postage along with the card? Do i send a pen for them to sign it with? What kind of pen would i sign?

4. How do you know the cards are being signed by the actual players and not a ghost signer? Can you send the signed cards to a grading company to get authenticated? (if so, who would u suggest?)

5. Is there a certain kind of card that works better to get signed? (meaning, perhaps a dark pen with a light colored card...)

6. I would like to do something a little different with my cards, would it be too weird to ask the players to sign the card and also write something (for example, ask them what their favorit color is, or who their idol is, or what is their favorit word...) ***Keep in mind, i assume this does lower the value of the cards, but i would not be collecting the cards for $$$, but for a personel collection, and i thought that doing something a little different would be neat, and make the cards more personable...

Any and all info is GREATLY appreciated...

I will answer with in the questions

1. TTM = through the mail ?

That is correct.

2. Where do you get the information on where and when to send the requests?

A few places have address books for sale:

http://www.baseballaddresses.com/

[B]http://www.sportscollectors.net/default.aspx

3. Lets assume i want to have baseball cards signed, do i send another self-addressed envelope with postage along with the card? Do i send a pen for them to sign it with? What kind of pen would i sign?

A SASE is always needed. No on the pen, but you can ask to have a certian style of pen (sharpie blue, sharpie black, thin ect) used. I think that the blue thin sharpie has always looked the best.

4. How do you know the cards are being signed by the actual players and not a ghost signer? Can you send the signed cards to a grading company to get authenticated? (if so, who would u suggest?)

It is a matter of trust. I would like to think that they are always the "Real McCoy". You can get them graded but I don't know that part of the industry.

5. Is there a certain kind of card that works better to get signed? (meaning, perhaps a dark pen with a light colored card...)

The lighter the color the best. I try to stay away from the "glossy" look as you have to rub the shine off them.

What I would suggest is not to have them write answers like that on the card but send a seperate questionaire. You could ask the player to personalize it for you, "To Joe" for example. You don't have alot of room on the card for lengthty answers.

Any and all info is GREATLY appreciated...

Glad I could help out

awsome, thanks for the reply, it all makes sense...

Does anyone know of a way to get the autographs "graded" or checked for authenticity? (PSA or soemthing?)

PSA/DNA and I think its $20 per card if my memory serves me. But I dont think many people do that with TTM cards because its more for personal collections. Who is going to spend $20 on a signed card from Joe Shmoe from the 85' Giants who only hit .145 and played in 40 games. Its more of a trust thing with the cards. Maybe if it was like a Griffey autograph, or bonds something like that it would probably be worth it if you wanted to sell it.
