For a long time I’ve been a big hater of P’s making all kinds of unnecessary throws to either keep runners close or to try to pick them off, and this last few days things have happened to make me think once again how stupid that play is.

The Indians were playing the Chisox today, and Hernandez tried to pick a runner off of 2nd base in the bottom of last inning of a tied game! You’d think a guy whose been around as long as Hernandez, knows darn well that the chances of actually picking that runner off of 2nd is about the same as winning the state lottery!

So what happens? Bad throw, and the runner ends up at 3rd. Now they load the bases to try to set up the DP or at least FP at the plate, but noooooooo! He hits the batter with the bases loaded to force in the winning run!

This weekend our HS team was at an Easter tournament, and there must’ve been 500 throws made by P’s in the 4 games we played! In the end, the P’s threw away 2 balls, and the fielders missed 3 throws. Once our P actually picked off a runner, but the 1B dropped a throw in the rundown!

I know it was just a coincidence, but in every case, the runner they tried to get, scored! 3 times the batters they quit paying close attention to got hits, and 3 times those batter walked. The best part is, of those 6 batter/runners, 3 of them scored too!

I’m not saying to just ignore the runners, but the 1st priority always has to be to get the batter!
