Today, April 4th, would have been GIL's 83rd birthday.

Let's remember GIL here today with all the wonderful moments he gave US, and how much he contributed to OUR BROOKLYN DODGERS being the best. :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

Thursday, December 22, 1955 Methodist Hospital New York: David Collins, a young patient, takes a tug at Old Saint Nick's beard and low and behold he finds Gil Hodges, first baseman of the World Champion Brooklyn Dodgers! A credit not only to baseball, but also to human decency. (Corbis)

April 4 is also my Mom's birthday. Two or three years before my parents were married ( in 1959 ), my Dad took my Mom to a Brooklyn Dodgers game at Ebbets Field. This was my Mom's first and only game at Ebbets Field. It was Gil Hodges night. I'm not sure what specifically Gil Hodges was being honored for. When I speak to her later today, I'm going to mention to her that she shares the same birthday with Gil Hodges. I'm sure that will bring back great memories for her.

Yesterday, Gil's home town -- Petersburg, Indiana -- dedicated a 52-foot by 16-foot mural celebrating the strong, silent man.

I'll see if there are any photos available.

Gil was my favorite. I still remember Gil Hodges night and watching it on TV. It must have been late 1957. I believe Johnny Roseboro was the starting catcher. I once asked Roseboro if he remembered it, and he said "no". I tried to look it up once with no luck. Anyone here remember the exact date?

The box score for June 19, 1957, doesn't list Roseboro at all. I specifically remember him playing. I just researched further, and found that it wasn't June 19, but July 19, 1957, and sure enough, Roseboro played.

"Gil Hodges Night" was part of a twin bill. In the first game, Roseboro pinch ran for Campy and continued behind the plate. He went 1 for 2, hitting a 10th inning game winning 3 run homer to beat the Cubs, 6-3. In the nightcap, Roseboro started and played the entire game. He went 1 for 2 again, with a double and 2 walks.

Gil was presented a sterling silver tray, containing engraved signatures of over 30 Dodgers. The tray is engraved “To Gil Hodges, From His Teammates, July 19, 1957.”

This story contains the local news video clip. There are plenty of views of the mural and memories from people who knew him:

Shame they didn't have Jackie autograph the plate.
