Woody Williams: "I can't be Roger, I can't be Andy," he said. "All I can do is, when they give me the ball, go out and do what I know I can do. Who I am is who I am. For them to ask me to be somebody else, I can't do it."

That could be some of the wisest words to come out of an athletes mouth in a long time. Thanks for the quote Zagi.

"We are a generally young team, with the exception of myself and a couple of other guys," Nationals first baseman Dmitri Young said. "If you see the manager panic, the players are going to panic. He didn't panic. We didn't panic."

"I've been very comfortable since day one here," said Maddux, who's also won 16 Gold Gloves. "The guys have all been great to deal with. They've treated me better than I've deserved to be treated."

Maddux is gentlemen.

Papi on Dice-K

"He's got great stuff. When you watch him on TV, it's like a Nintendo game. He throws pitches that normally pitchers don't throw for a strike. He's got pitches that just disappear when they get to the plate."

I knew it. His pitches are invisible. :D

It's even more unique, in that an athlete actually said all this, without saying, "You know", at least three times.

I know, I know. It was probably edited. :atthepc

Another over-kill phrase is "like I said", usually when the player runs out of things to say. :blah:

"I'm not a big meeting-type guy, but I thought it was the right time," said Acta, adding that he was reassuring during the meeting, and "didn't raise my voice that high."

A three-game set at NYM ... :dance

Maybe to raise his voice ? And he wouldn't shave until his team wins again !!

Probably the most literate guy I've heard interviewed is Juan Padilla, currently on the DL for the Mets. In the couple live interviews I've heard of him, he has not once said "you know," and appeared to be quite at ease, especially for a guy who is presumably speaking English as a second language.

EDIT: Well hey! I forgot a quote from Juan. How's this one (it's paraphrased, but darn close)...
Kevin Burkhardt: "So, how do you feel about the Mets this year?"
Padilla: "I am of the belief that we can go all the way. We have a heck of a ballclub that comes through when needed, and I just would rather not be injured. I want to be an active part of this team!"

"What he's going through isn't abnormal," Rolen said. "What he's done his entire career is what's abnormal. This is more normal for human beings, for players, than what he's done for four, five, six years. It's just another day at the park for us."

Today Pujols went 2-for-5, 2 HRs, and 5 RBIs.
