What has always fascinated collectors about the Topps legacy is that it is so unfailingly human in its inconsistency over the years. Depending on the year, the company's issues have hit some amazing highs, and also bottomed out with some abysmal lows. But they keep on going, maintaining that one constant thread throughout the hobby's history.

Naturally, those of you who collect Topps, as I do, have developed certain favorites over the years. In this poll, I'd like to know what the crowd's alltime favorite "vintage" set is. Vintage is understood to be all Topps sets from 1951, its first issue, to 1973, the last year the company released the cards in sequential "series" over the course of the summer. As collectors naturally lost interest toward the end of the summer (as school resumed, etc.) the later series were not printed in nearly the numbers the earlier ones were, making them, to this day, far rarer and expensive when filling a set. Beginning in '74, Topps began releasing its yearly set in its entirety in the spring.

I have given a choice for each and every set in the vintage line, so we don't have the problem with the "other" choice, and posters complaining that their favorites were not included.

One more thing: This poll only includes each year's "base" set. (No special editions this time.)

Go to it. Use this link for getting a good look at the makeup of each year's issue: http://www.gfg.com/baseball/50stars.shtml

Talk about a tough poll! Man, I sat here for a straight minute just staring at 1954, and 1960. Then my finger twitched towards 1960. Hence my vote. :waving

I must say 1957 Topps is my favourite card set.

Hard to choose among '54, '56, '57, '59, '61, '63. Voted for '59 because it was the set I decided to put together 12 years ago when I got back into bb cards as a middle-aged woman.

I choose the 1974 set because I have vivid memories of "Fliipping" them with my friends. We never actually flipped them though. You went by colors. I throw one out, you throw one out. If the colors matched you took them. I rember the rules were: no firsts, no lasts, no shades, no larry's. I can't for the life of me remember what the last one meant.

My sentimental pick says 1975 because that is the year I started collecting. As far as appearance goes, I like the 1956 set.

It took me several years to complete and upgrade, but I finished a nearmint/mint 1956 Topps set all graded 8 or better by PSA about 3 years ago. It was a gratifying collecting experience, as only a handful of sets exist that are rated higher. This was the only set that I collected as a youngster, though I bought packs and had many other 50's cards, including my favorite, a mint, centered 1955 Clemente rookie.

Unfortunately, I had to sell all last year due to unforseen financial circumstances, but still have the set, in essence, as I scanned and filed each card on my computer. The set was sold in a Maestro auction and the winning bid was over $40k. I am still in the PSA registry as the 20th best all-time set and I have several of the key cards scanned. Here is the url:

Enjoy.

I loved the 1955 set. It took most of the summer back then to get the Yankees and Dodgers team cards. The A's were easy to get.

1956 - a nice head shot with mostly great action shots in the background, and a good overall look, this is my all-time favorite set.

However, 1957 is almost a tie, as they are beautiful clean cards that really capture better than any other set the "old-time" feeling on them.

1953 Bowman would be a great set too if they just had the names on them like the 1957 Topps.
