Welcome to the Baseball Fever Hall of Fame

The Baseball Fever Hall of Fame (BBFHoF) was established to honor the greatest players and contributors in baseball history. We seek to match our wits against those of the National Hall of Fame in Cooperstown by comparing and contrasting our selections to their own. Our elections are held every three weeks.

All voters are welcome, however, prospective voters should first read our rules (in this post) and must agree to observe them.

The idea of this project has always been that each member will cast his or her own individual ballot without creating voting blocs a la "Survivor". If I become aware of violations of this concept, they will be dealt with. Toward that end, if there is more than one vote being cast from any one computer or IP, it must be cleared in advance, or only the first vote will be counted. I only anticipate exceptions for family members living in the same home, like the Chancellor and the Wizard, but I will entertain requests on other bases. Please note that I and the other mods who participate in the project have the capability of determining the IP from which posts come, and I for one intend to monitor same.

There is only one election which occurs monthly at this point: for players who meet at least one of the following criteria: a) are not on the 40 man roster or DL in the most recent season, b) officially retired (or died) by November 1 of the last completed season, c) are over 40 and haven't played in the majors in the most recent completed season. There is an election for contributors to the game, who are either retired or at least 60 years of age, but that election is now held only once a year, in November. Ballots must be posted in the monthly voting thread by the end of the voting cycle and adhere to the rules below in order to be counted. I will post the last day of the voting cycle in the post beginning each voting cycle. Also, I reserve the right to reject ballots which do not alphabetize the listing of candidates. The process of counting the votes is hard enough, and my spreadsheet is set up to take advantage of the tradition of alphabetized ballots.

Players from and contributors to the major, negro and japanese leagues are eligible for consideration. For clarity, I consider the following leagues part of the "negro leagues": the US American Leagues, Cuban Winter Leauge to 1950, Mexican League to 1950, Puerto Rican Winter League to 1950, the 1937 Dominican League and the California Winter League. Once inducted as either a player or contributor, an individual is no longer eligible for consideration in the other capacity. Players are to be considered based on their performance and its impact on their teams. Contributors are to be considered for the quality and impact of their contribution to their teams and/or the sport in general. (This may include a contributor's playing career.)

A Players Ballot should list the 25 most deserving candidates (until we have elected at least 90% of the number of players in Cooperstown.) A Contributors Ballot should list up to the 15 most deserving candidates. When shorter ballots are permitted, the minimum number of candidates will be the number which, when added to the number elected to the BBF HOF brings us equal to the to the number of contributors or players (depending on the category in question). When new minimum vote numbers apply, they will be posted. When we get to the point where the minimum vote is zero (as with the contributor ballot), a voter may submit a ballot indicating " I do not believe there are any qualified (player/contributor) candidates".

We have now reached the point where a ballot of as few as zero (0) names is acceptable on the contributor side.

Please note that once a person is elected either as a contributor or as a player, he is no longer eligible to receive votes in either category.

At the conclusion of each election (11:59:59 PM Eastern US time on the date specified in the first post of each voting thread), the votes will be tabulated and any candidate named on the greater of nine or 75% or more of the valid ballots in a given category (player or contributor) will be inducted that month.

You are allowed to change your ballot at any time the ballot is open. However, I request that you PM me (jalbright) to ensure that I am aware of the change. It would be most helpful if you could tell me who was added and/or subtracted from your ballot. I cannot agree to be responsible for monitoring the thread for any changes voters might make. If I catch them, fine, but if I don't and am not notified, the official count will be what I have been notified of, not what is on the thread.

This project is winding down, and we have rules with respect how many players we must elect in a period of time and the minimum number of participants in order to keep the project going. In terms of the number of voters, if we fail to get at least 12 voters in any two out of three voting cycles, this project will immediately go to an annual only mode, with voting in November. There is a point system for determining the minimum number of elected players to keep the project from going to a November only status. It is as follows: 1 point if we elect a player in a given voting cycle, plus two points for every player elected during that cycle. The total will be run for each of the past four voting cycles, and if we've got eight points or more, we continue as before. An example may clarify:

this June, we elected three players for 7 points (1 for the cycle, two each for the players)
in July, we elected three players for 7 points
in August, we elected no one for 0 points
in September, we elected no one for 0 points

So we had 14 points going into this month, well above the minimum of 8. However, in this month, if we don't elect anyone, we'd have 0 more points, and less than the 8 needed.

================================================== =============

Also, it is permissible to vote for a candidate on both the contributor and player lists

Feel free to ask questions by either sending jalbright a PM, or by posting a question in this or the BBF HOF discussion thread.

Through JW's ballot, we've had seven valid ballots (the lone invalid ballot caster has been notified by PM), and no one has more than five votes. There's a significant chance we won't elect anyone this month. Of all the candidates with four or more votes (anyone with three would at least need to run the table), none project to have as much as an even money shot at election based on last month's votes. If we regain some of the voters lost last month, this may improve. Anyway, the projection system I use sees the chances of the candidates with 4 or 5 votes currently this way (remembering that the number after the name represents the current percentage chance of election this month):

Cepeda, Orlando 44
Groh, Heinie 44
Whitaker, Lou 44
Mays, Carl 41
Bunning, Jim 33
Clark, Will 33
Gore, George 15
Mendez, Jose 15
Aparicio, Luis 11
Beckwith, John 11
Boyer, Ken 9
Hill, Pete 9
Rice, Sam 9
Starffin, Victor 9
Sutter, Bruce 9
Beckley, Jake 7
Grant, Frank 7
Palmeiro, Rafael 7
Wallace, Bobby 6

One week into this voting cycle of 5/5 to 5/25, and we're already down to three candidates with a credible chance of election. Anybody with less than five votes has no real chance. Those with 5 need for us to add at least two more voters and run the table, so they're extreme longshots. There are two candidates with six of the nine votes cast so far, Luis Aparicio and Carl Mays. These two need to run the table unless we add at least two voters, in which case they can be left off of one ballot and still be elected. Aparicio has no support among the five outstanding voters, so he's got very little chance. Mays, on the other hand, has the support of 4 of the five outstanding voters, so he's got a chance. There's no one with seven votes right now, and only one with 8, Orlando Cepeda. He's been supported by 3 of the five outstanding voters from last month, which puts him on pace for election.

With John Shoemaker's revision of his ballot, Aparicio has moved to seven votes, which improves his position a little, in that he can be left off of one ballot this month and still make it. However, since he's not on any of the five outstanding ballots, the final outcome isn't likely to change. Ken Boyer, Jake Beckley and Ross Barnes have moved up to the six vote category, which means they must run the table. Unfortunately for all three, they only had the support of one voter each last month--so they're not likely to make it this month, either.

The state of this voting cycle, with a little less than a week to go, is as follows:

Orlando Cepeda with 10 of the 11 votes cast so far is in excellent shape. He is supported by one of the three outstanding voters from last month, which would be enough. The only real danger for him is new voters who leave him off their ballots.

Luis Aparicio with 9 of the 11 votes cast so far is currently on a pace to make it, and can being left off of one ballot and still make it. The problem is, he's not on any of the three outstanding ballots. He's got a real chance, but it's hard to say whether or not he'll make it this month.

Carl Mays with 8 of the 11 votes cast so far is just off the pace. However, he had the support of two of the three outstanding voters last month. If the last of the three changes his mind or fails to vote, that would be enough to put him in. Another close call.

There are a bunch of guys with 7 of the 11 votes cast, but since they a) need to run the table and b) we have to add enough voters to get to 16 votes, they're real longshots, especially since all of them were left off of at least one of the 3 outstanding ballots from last month.

Cepeda, Aparicio, and Mays are all outstanding choices for this month, and I for one would be very happy if we could get 2 out of those 3 elected.

- We've exhausted the list of all-time 1Bmen and with the election of Bill Terry, we've said yes to at least one second-tier 20th century player by all-time standards. Some would argue Murray but I whole-heartedly disagree. I would argue Sisler but the Murray camp would disagree. I think that, provided we elect a comparable amount of players to those in Cooperstown, that a select best of the rest at 1B needs to be included. Contrary to popular belief, history shows that fewer players were able to meet certain standards at 1B than at corner OF. Cepeda is a viable choice for the next 1B elected.

- Ozzie Smith was elected a long time ago, and recently we elected Nellie Fox. Aparicio is therefore a viable option as a defensive specialist... but of course it begs the question if he's elected, who else like him is deserving?

- Carl Mays I believe is just as good a pitcher as several who are already in (Lemon, Lyons, McGinnity, Sutton), and he is one of the oldest tenured players on my ballot. He's also one of the last pitchers I'm certain should be elected... as in, I don't think his election opens any more doors than are open right now.

Hopefully things'll turn out, but you never know. :gt
