Would any of the names listed be an acceptable alternative for the baseball Hall of Fame -- as you understand the purpose of that shrine?

Hall of Admiration
Hall of Heros
Hall of Honor
Hall of Stat Leaders
Other?

Hall of Fame is the standard term for this honor, well beyond baseball. The term predates Cooperstown. While the other suggestions you have are suitable, Luke, I don't think it needs to be changed. It's like changing the word president to describe the elected head of something.

HoF is it. No other term will do.

I was searching for alternative names that might better clarify the purpose: is it to honor greatness or heros or what? In other words, "should character matter?"

I did not realize that some other Halls of Fame pre-date Cooperstown. I thought they copied baseball.

Maybe in structure, but the phrase predates it.I believe there was something called the American Hall of Fame, for great Americans, at the turn of the century. I am not sure if there was a physical structure or not. Bill James, in his The Politics of Glory mentioned the term was used to describe any great performance.

That's the thing, fame is an ambiguous enough term to cover a spectrum of possibilites. Which goes well in line with never establishing (and they shouldn't) direct criteria for what a HOF'er is. Life is subjective.

Ditto. I would choose Hall of Honor if I were at gunpoint and forced to switch. But the term "Hall of Fame" has a universal meaning now; like "Scotch Tape".

I too feel that "Hall of Fame" is just fine. The term goes well beyond baseball and is an adequately universal term for any establishment designed to pay homage to those who excelled in their particular field.

I think I know why the poll was started, though, so I'll make a choice based on the hypothetical given that the name would be changed by some mandate, edict, or court order. I would choose "Hall of Heroes" if that were the case.

Of course, changing it to "Hall of Honor" would certainly put to rest all of the arguments for and against certain blemished players who've been accused of dishonoring the game. It would also be a great way to rationalize inducting so many of those honorable souls who went or were sent somewhere to kill and/or die for some military purpose. Bleh. Of all the choices listed, "Hall of Honor" offends my sensibilities the most.

Hall of Achievement. If you can't achieve some longevity and "achieve" some moderate team success, your chances are low.

Hall of Good Standing, heh.

The Sportswriters' Hall of Fame (though there's VC). It's kind of odd to be THE Hall of Fame without Blyleven for one.

I picked achievement because every discussion in fever about who is worthy centers on their acheivements, not their fame.

Hall of achievement because every discussion of who should be in or out revolves around acheivements.
