As promised, I'll make my pick. Just saw that the thread was up.

Lew's Legends begin the 1965 rookie draft by selecting right handed pitcher:

21000

FERGUSON (FERGIE) JENKINS

Legends management stated: "There were many good looking young arms in this year's draft, but we felt that Fergie had the most potential. He has a nice, smooth motion and we feel that will help prevent injury to his arm in the future. Of course, only time will tell, but we hold out high hopes for his future with this team."

When interviewed, Jenkins stated: "I was very pleased to be taken by the Legends. I know they are looking to the future and hoping to develop some young pitchers. I feel that I can contribute to the Legends' quest for a championship in the near future, and I look forward to a long and enjoyable stay with the team."

Yeah, did the best I could with a new graphics program (Gimp) that I'm trying to learn. Believe me, it isn't easy. Would you believe a total of about 4 hours to put that together? One of those deals where the first time is just totally and incredibly difficult, trying to learn everything at once!:noidea Anyway, now that I'm a little better versed perhaps it won't take nearly so long next time!

And thanks, I was hoping to get the first pick this year. I ended up trading for it, but I wanted to draft Jenkins. He produces the most the quickest and is quite steady over his career. Not as many peaks as the others (Carlton/Palmer) , but not the valleys, either. He has the same 115 ERA+ career wise as Carlton; has a better career WHIP (1.142 to Carlton's 1.247); and a better K/BB ratio (3.20 to 2.36). The disadvantage is he allowed more homers than Carlton (one every 9.3 IP to Carlton's one every 12.6 IP). But I can live with that.

500K for the next 4, and
250K for anyone past that

Making Palmer a franchise player pick is an excellent move, Max, IMHO. Had that option been available to me, I may have taken him first; would've been a tossup between him, Jenkins and Carlton as a franchise player. But only having six years guaranteed to me, I had to go with Jenkins.

Nice pick on Blefary, Joe. I was very tempted myself, but at this point I already have two left handed hitting OF'ers waiting to arrive (Northrup and Staub). And Mark is dead on that Blefary will have an immediate impact. At this point, I would pick him as the favorite for ROY honors, although of course there will be teams with players who've been in the minors for a couple years that will be debuting full time this year, such as Rusty Staub and Tommy John for my Legends.

Hands won out over a couple of other pitchers I was looking at very closely. Of course, I won't mention any names because perhaps one will still slip to me in round two, although I doubt it. But my staff should now be pretty solid from 1967 through 1969.

Thanks. I should be able to get 3 quality years out of him, and really wanted an impact bat this season, so he was the logical choice for my team.

Like others, Hands was on my short list. Your pitching should be set through the end of the decade now.

I think you made a great pick, Jim. I almost took him over Hands with the fourth pick! I was very torn. His last three years really don't look great on the surface, but check the WHIP and K/BB and this guy has it working.

Nice pick on Johnson, too, Jason. I was hoping with Blefary and all the pitchers that Johnson would somehow sneak through to my next pick.

Erik Bedard
03-14-2007, 07:41 PM
Wow. I don't think I've ever been this torn between three guys in ANY draft. When I consider two guys as much of a wash as I consider the two leading candidates for this pick, I go with the Canadian. Who, in this case, is

JOHN HILLER.

Did I ever say that this draft is not fun...especially since I am STILL 11 picks out from my FIRST pick!!!!!

That's why one should never trade away 1st rounders!

There are 11 picks until I get one, and really, only 7 guys that I really want. Here's hoping I get at least 1 of them.

I am just kidding about the whole not being fun part. It is exciting to see which players I don't get :)

I probably would've taken Blefary ahead of White, only because of the short term productivity. Long term, White or Tovar would've been my pick. Tovar is especially useful, since he plays so many positions. Sorry to see both of them taken before I got another pick! That pretty much eliminates any position players I was looking at (well, maybe one more), so I guess I'll be concentrating on pitchers this entire draft, at least until very close to the end.
I think they've all been good picks so far, although I was a bit surprised White went quite so high. Three good years, then a free agent. But of course, the HD rule has to be considered, so I may have done the same!

I don't know why you're qualifying that with "almost." In 1968, he played C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF, and P (all in the same game). And he's got a lifetime ERA of 0.00.

I suppose it was just wishful thinking to hope he would last till my next pick in the third round...

catcher24
03-16-2007, 04:21 PM
I'm a bit surprised he went this early, though. I had him pegged much later in the draft. He only provides 1969 and 1970, then he's a free agent. Granted, the HT rule will help, but someone still might outbid for him, especially with those big seasons he has in 71 and 72. I hope it works out well for you Max, but he'd be too risky for my taste this early!:D

Um, this should be the Redbirds' pick... I traded #14 along with #11 to move up to #6 and grab Davey Johnson.

I may have been mistaken but I didn't think Davey would've lasted until #11... I had him rated as the best infielder by far in this draft (though a couple "utility" players, including Cesar Tovar, aren't that far off)... and we sorely needed a 2B for the future.

And besides, with Johnson and McNally we've gotten back a little Oriole flavor we lost when Brooks left :) .

Posted by Wasp:
Lew, when I start to sign free agents that are not those who are bid off to owners, do I pay them the minimum?

That's correct to an extent, Max. Next Friday is the Premium Free Agent Auction, where the players go on the block one at a time, and remain there until signed by someone (or no one bids). When that is done, it goes to the regular FA auction. That covers two or three days. You can bid on any player, posting the amount of your bid. Other owners can post higher bids. Then, in the last hour, only one bid per post is allowed, and whoever has the highest bid on a player at the end of that hour gets the player. Finally, anyone not taken in either auction can be picked up, first come, first served, at the minimum 250K.

Hope that answered your question. If not, PM me.

I show Jim taking nobody in the second round (I had his pick via trade); Joe Coleman in the third round and now Greg Goossen. So unless he picked up an extra position in the draft via trade, I think he's right up to date on his picks. I think I see who he's talking about. I only see one other player who is much use during the 1965 season, and I'm a bit surprised he's still around as well.

Since Mark passed on any further picks, and it's now been 15 hours since Mac's pick, I'd have to say that Jason's eight hour clock has run out and the Redbirds are now on the clock (can't remember if they passed for the remainder of the draft or not). Pirates are next; they've also waived. Diablos next; waived. All other teams had already waived. Gold Sox have all of the Shoeless Joes' remaining slots in this draft via trade. So it appears I THINK I know who Jim has in mind. Still on my list, and if no one takes him prior to my pick coming around again, we'll see.

At this point I don't really know who should be picking, but I think the Stingers are up. I show the last pick was by the Cannons on 3/20 at 9:24PM (Brant Alyea). That put the Gamblers on the clock. Wil's 8 hour clock would have expired at about 6AM on the 21st, but giving benefit of it being so early, figure 8AM - and he's waived now anyway. That would bring up the Hard Cider, whose clock would've expired at 4PM on the 21st. Figure to 6PM for cushion, and Mac's clock expired. The Knights have already waived any further picks. The Skipjacks waived at 7:43AM today (22nd), and the Redbirds have already waived any further picks. So I THINK the Stingers are on the clock at about 8AM today, then the Gold Sox (in the slot they got from the Shoeless Joes).
