I see everyone giving the 1961 AL award to Maris. No direspect to Maris, but he didn't deserve the award when he won it and doesn't deserve it anymore now either.
Mickey Mantle had a beastly year, better than Maris' year. The only thing Maris had were the home runs.

I don't get Maris either. Roger Maris hit 7 more home runs than Mickey Mantle. That is where his advantages begin and end. Maris was just not even close to the overall hitter Mantle was. Mantle hit for a high average, Maris' was barely above average, Mantle also drew more walks so along with his BA he had a huge OBP lead. Because of the BA he also had a big lead in slugging. He was better at getting on and advancing runners. Maris hit .269/.372/.620. Mantle hit .317/.448/.687. Despite 7 more HRs Maris really had about the same power-his ISO was only one point better. And Mantle has much higher OBP. Mantle was a CFer, Maris a RFer. Mantle was losing his speed at that point but was still very fast. I just don't see how Maris was more valuable.

Because, he had immortalized himself as a legend. Mantle had a great season, but not even that can measure up to immortality.

AlecBoy, Koufax didn't play in '67.
Also, I'm wondering why no one has voted for Petrocelli in '69.. He had a 170 OPS+ and 40 HRs from a shortstop, along with very good defense. But everyone seems to vote for Killebrew who played 3B half the season... very badly I might add, and 1B the other half... and his offensive stats are only slightly better than Petrocelli's.

Well, Killebrew outperformed Petrocelli in raw stats, and OPS+, plus, he helped lead his team the playoffs. I'm guessing that's much the reason why Reggie Smith was elected MVP for 1977 in the previous decade by our fever community.

I understand he outpreformed Petrocelli offensively... But if we went that way, we wouldnt be giving MVPs to many infielders, even if they deserve them. Defensively, Killebrew was BAD and Petrocelli was one of the best defensive players in the league.

What do you mean? You dont like the word 'valuable' because it's subjective? Or because you'll only vote for players whos teams are in the hunt since it's called valuable?

1960-Mickey Mantle
1961-Mickey Mantle-See post I already made. Maris set the record, but that doesn't mean he was a better player, or even close.
1962-Mickey Mantle
1963-Elston Howard
1964-Mickey Mantle-Brooks had an awesome glove, but even in his best hitting season Mantle has more than enough offense.
1965-Tony Oliva
1966-Frank Robinson
1967-Carl Yastrzemski
1968-Carl Yastrzemski
1969-Reggie Jackson
NL
1960-Willie Mays
1961-Willie Mays-Am I missing what makes Robinson better this year? Robinson hit essentially the same as Mays...but Mays was Mays in CF. I know Robinson's Reds won the pennant (and a surprise one at that), but I still think that Mays was clearly a better, more valuable player.
1962-Frank Robinson-This is a better year for Frank IMO.
1963-Hank Aaron
1964-Dick Allen-Allen hit .341/.434/.618 in September. Don't know if you can blame him for his team collapsing around him.

Petrocelli was one of the best defensive players in the league.
Petrocelli didn't have a good defensive reputation. He was known in his time as someone who was "too big" to play shortstop. I take such claims with a grain of salt, I think people should focus on production rather than how you look while you're playing, but that was the perception. Statistcally, it does seem Rico stacks up very well. Perhaps I should change to him. Reggie was in the very fast RB/safety strong armed RF ballhawk portion of his career though. I'd say, for the Killebrew supporters, that the Jackson comparison should be even easier than the Rico one. Reggie is not only better in the field but he's also probably a better hitter. Killebrew got small Metropolitan Stadium and Reggie had the Oakland Coliseum. Killebrew's OPS+ is 179 and Reggie's 187.

I see many people say Aaron in 63. The reason I say Cepeda, is because, he won the MVP in 67, but I feel he was better in 63.

I agree and also thought Mantle deserved it but I still went with Maris for all that he had to go through. Plus Maris numbers besides HRs are not that much removed from Mantle...actually I take that back Mantle's numbers are pretty impressive.
Mantle - runs created 172
Maris 137
Mantle - OPS 1.135
Maris .993
Put it this way...I would not lose sleep if Mantle got the vote :)

Mantle in 62 is a joke.
He didn't play the whole season, and Yankees still win the World Series.
Seriously, how VALUABLE could you be that year?

Not quite a joke; he was a beast offensively, but I think your point is correct. I'm changing my vote to Brooks Robinson. Created nearly as many runs, and was Brooks Robinson in the field.

I don't feel like doing every year because I don't have all the numbers in front of me, but here's 1 year:
1968: McLain, Gibson
What's with people voting for Yaz lately in 1968? How can you not give a 31 game winner the MVP when he's the first 30 game winner since 1934?
Never joined one of these before but I'll throw my hat in.
