He was up for the following awards:

Silver Sluggers (won)

Jeter's father, Dr. Charles Jeter, a Psychologist who is an alcohol & drug counselor, is from Alabama and is black.
Jeter's mother, the former Dorothy Connor, is white and an accountant,
who is of Irish heritage and from NJ.
Jeter's maternal grandmother, Dorothy (Tiedemann) Connors, the Yankee fan in the family,
got her grandson interested in baseball @ age 6. She was one of 14 children.

Jeter's parents are the executive directors of his charity, the "Turn 2 Foundation", to keep kids away from drugs & alcohol.
Thru "Turn 2" the family has set up the "Connors/Jeter Scholarship Fund" at
Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, NJ, in honor of his grandfather,
William "Sonny" Connors, who worked as the school's maintenance supervisor for 36 years.

That's where Derek got his work ethic from. He and his younger sister Sharlee
would spend summers in NJ with their grandparents. His grandfather was at work by 6:30 a.m. every day.
He would be there at 3 a.m. shoveling snow and on Saturdays for weddings at the church.
They opened presents on Christmas Eve, because Sonny always worked on Christmas Day.
His grandfather died of a heart attack on New Years 1999.
I read somewhere that Derek's grandfather was adopted in NJ.
