Phillie's verbal salvo gets Mets' attention
BY DON BURKE

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Philadelphia Phillies fired the first salvo in what promises to be a long, hot summer of head-banging and, apparently, trash-talking in the National League East.
On Tuesday, shortstop Jimmy Rollins repeated a claim he made earlier in the winter that his Phillies are the team to beat in the division the Mets controlled from start to finish in 2006.
Rollins' rant, in which he questioned the Mets' motivation as well as the aging state of their starting rotation, reached members of Willie Randolph's team yesterday, moments after they completed their first full-squad workout of the spring.
"Good for him," Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran said when Rollins' comments were relayed to him. "What'd they win last year?"

lol... Rollins' Phillies have not won more than 88 games since he has been a member of that team...
Do they have an advantage as far as starters go? Yeah sure but they are relying on an aging Moyer, who is 44years old, Eaton, who is coming off an injury plagued and horrible year, Jon Leiber, who will be 37 and supposed to be the #1 starter and an unproven pitcher in Hamels along with Myers (IMO, their best pitcher along with Garcia), throw that with a very shakey bullpen and a good lineup but not a great lineup with the exception of Howard, Rollins, Utley and a sporadic Burrell, how exactly are they better than the Mets? Their 1 very good starter IMO is Freddie Garcia...
I see an advantage in SP (but not as big of one as many will lead you to believe) but we have a HUGE advantage in the bullpen (one that I feel is one of the better ones in all of baseball) as well as total offense..
Seriously, besides 1B and 2B, where would the Phillies have the advantage? And at 1B its only because Howard is an absolute BEAST... Mets still have one of the better offensive 1B in the NL in Delgado...
I applaud Rollins for trying to motivate his team but this is the 2nd time he has made those comments and I think the only thing he is accomplishing with this is to motivate the Mets (as if they werent already motivated before)...
Should be a fun, interesting year this year in the NL East:)

Looks to me like there's a virus spreading in the Phillies' clubhouse. Unsportsmanlikitis. Hope they can keep it quarantined to the City of Brotherly Love.

All this doesn't really bother me much. Most of the Mets seem to like Jimmy. The Phillies should be good this year. Our toughest competition in the division in my eyes. It's time for the Rollins, Utleys, Howards, etc. to assume leadership down there. I'm looking forward to the battle.

Yup, we all are. And yes, the Phillies may very well be the toughest competition in the division this year.
Thing is, between guys like Rollins and Myers making press with their idiotic statements, it doesn't make for good sportsmanship. I mean, I'd say the same thing if it were Howard or Utley, but coming from Rollins and Myers? My thoughts are they should prove themselves on the field before they start spitting on our on-deck circle.
Bluto used to talk a lotta talk, but let's face it, Popeye always spoke softly, took some guff, ate his spinach, then kicked Bluto into second place (...or outer space, depending on the episode). ;)

My comments were only towards Rollins. He's earned his leadership spot. It could very well backfire on him but I think I understand where he's coming from. As for Myers, he needs to pipe down and prove he's a major league starter.

Let Rollins run his mouth. That will make the boasting and 'rubbin in dere faces' all that sweeter.

Don't get riled up boys. He's just chirping to get his own team motivated.

Who cares. Both teams just gotta focus on winning on the field.
Their starting rotation is better on paper, there's no doubt, but the Cubs rotation of Prior, Wood, and Zambrano has looked awesome on paper for years. It means nothing.
