Actually, through 1968, Aaron only had 510 homeruns. He didn't pass Mantle until the following year. Mantle was third when he retired.

I have Mickey's 1969 baseball card and keep thinking he retired after the '69 season when in fact it was during spring training in '69 when he retired.

Mickey Cochrane of the A's. He later played for the Tigers after Mantle was born.

And he was named Mickey after Mickey Cochrane because that was Mantle's
father Mutt's favorite player.

Billy Martin?
Who else?
I could ask who shot some cows on one of Mantle's friends' farm during a hunting trip with the Mick, but the answer is the same.
If you haven't heard that story, it's a great one that Mantle told on Carson years ago.
Mantle probably could have reached 600HR if he hadn't hung around with Billy...
I still remember when I lived in Dallas and Billy took a beating in a bathroom at a strip club in Arlington. While he was managing the Yankees. And Mickey was there with him. Just the kind of publicity they both needed...some reporter asked Billy if he had a drinking problem after that, and Billy hollered, "Drinking problem? I haven't had a drink in TWO DAYS!!!"

And it was his father, Elvin "Mutt" Mantle, who foresaw the age of platooning
and a manager having his righthanded batters face lefthanded pitchers,
and vice versa. So if you could hit from both sides of the plate, you could play more.
And then Mickey's manager, the Ol' Perfessor Casey Stengel,
started utilizing the lost art of platooning players, and used it to great success.
And the rest, as they say.....is history.

Mutt was also a semipro catcher.

Bigrcube
03-14-2007, 05:54 AM
Mutt was also a semipro catcher.

That must explain his favorite player being Mickey Cochrane,
a fellow catcher, who as someone earlier mentioned, was born:
Gordon Stanley Cochrane and nicknamed "Black Mike".....?!
Good thing he didn't name his son Gordon or Stanley?!
Could you imagine, Gordon Mantle (Gordy) or Stanley Mantle?!
He would have never been a star with a name like that, ay?!
That would have made him Stan "The Man" Mantle, and that name was already taken?!
