What is the best type of prescription eye wear for a catcher to wear under the head gear.

Or is there special head gear to wear with sports glasses.

Any catchers out that are happy with a certain type of frame.

Contacts. Almost anything else will get pulled off when you take off the mask.

Several of our HS players wore the Nike tinted contacts last spring. They were trying them out for an optometrist that also happens to coach their summer team. The lenses are tinted and designed to cut down on glare and provide greater clarity.
Some liked them, some didn't. Maybe they would do the trick?

I've been catching for over 25 years, and 24 of them wearing contact lenses --- the old school daily wear type. Never once had an issue with one falling out or anything like that in over 1000 games.

I'm not a catcher, but I use these contacts that you're able to keep in for a week at a time. They work great and I don't even feel them. If you're interested, I could find the name.

In youth ball, I caught for three years wearing glasses. Generally it wasn't too much of a problem, because you shouldn't be taking the mask off all that much anyway. Back then, the straps weren't all that elastic, so you really had to yank to get the mask off over glasses. But, with practice, it still became second nature to clear the glasses first. Heck, if Jim Abbot can put a glove on after every pitch, I can work out a motion to safely take a mask off. And those weren't athletic goggles, either; just my normal horn-rimmed style clunkers.

Oh, yeah, there were a couple times when the glasses came off with the mask and it became really dicey trying to catch a pop-up. But I was always wobbling around lurching after the ball even when I could see the ball.

The biggest problem came when I became an umpire, because you couldn't protect against foul tips, and if they spun the mask around they'd really mess up the frames. It finally got to the point where the glasses were unusuable till I could afford new frames. First game I showed up without the specs, the coaches asked me about it. "Yeah, finally got contacts!" I lied. And that was when I didn't have any base umps. I tell you, those calls on plays across the diamond at second base were pure guesswork.

One of our 15U has worn the goggle with the head strap thing for the last couple of years with no apparent problem when he pulls the headgear. We mostly use the hockey style but I've also ssen him with the older style helmet mask combo.

The only issue he's had is when he takes the mound and some coach on the other team hollers about his  “sunglasses” but since they are clear and corrective the Blue just nods and says let's play.

Just went thru this w/11 yr old son. Had glasses for 2-weeks. Now the glasses are for back up and at night. Contacts were the way to go for him. Took a week to get used to putting them in but now he's a pro at it.

Most of the kids that I work with his age just have their regular daily wear glasses on.

Have seen a few that have special sports frames from their optomotrist and I have seen a few that have contacts.

Mask only comes off quickly for pop fouls and have seen little problems with glasses getting in the way.

Thanks for everything

The email you sent me the other day from your skills and drills site has given my son and me a blessing/large amount of information.

Thanks again
