Have any whole numbers never been worn in a Major League regular-season game?

Rick White once used 00, and Al Oliver used 0 and also Kerry Robinson for the Padres used 0.

The Texas Rangers used 0 for Oddibe McDowell and again for Al Oliver. Paul Dade, an Indians outfielder in the late 70's, used 00.

I believe Jeffrey Leonard also used 00 for a time.

Most higher number, say above 50, are usually used for spring training purposes if not already taken. Without looking, I'd venture a guess that many of the numbers used for offensive lineman, defensive front seven and wide receivers in football have not been used during the regular season.

After a brief scan through a book about uniform numbers, I'll start with 69 when I get a chance and work my way upward. I could fairly easily find at least one use of numbers below this, but above this it starts to get sketchy.

The number 75 is the highest number ever worn by a Giant (Barry Z. will wear it this season). You rarely see numbers higher than 60. I know in high school (and maybe college?) basketball, you may only use the digits 1-5, because referees use fingers on each hand to indicate fouls on specific players, etc. I wonder if any teams have policies regarding what numbers may and may not be worn, beyond retired numbers.

I never knew that 0 and 00 were allowed. So it's any # from 00-99?

Interesting fact: I know that Juan Guzman wore #63 because is was his # in ST, and he wanted to continue his success in the spring into the season.

If we're going with interesting reasons behind high numbers, there's Carlton Fisk and his no. 72 with Chicago, the opposite of what he had in Boston.

The New York Yankees do not issue the numbers 0 or 00. But the Cardinals did for a couple pitchers, and 00 was worn by Omar Olivares.

If you look at number lists from the the years following WWII, you will see that very few Major Leaguers wore number 13.

Personally, I can't think of a better number to start with. Of course, I tend to work my way down when I begin there, but... *thinks* ...I'll shut up now. :p

:D Hehe, the window was just too large.

Anyway, if it helps, the Mets have to date never issued 60, 63 through 72, nor 74 through 98 for a regular-season game.

As well, I've never seen a player wear a three-digit number. I'm curious to know if there ever was one.

Captain Cold Nose: I believe Jeffrey Leonard also used 00 for a time.
he sure did.
he claimed that his career was kinda starting over following serious injury + surgery. :lookitup

and for a while, benito santiago placed a zero in fron of his single digit, so that the two-digit uni numbernumber would not be obscured by the back strap of his chest protector. :crazy

Hopefully this will answer some of the questions that have been asked. I said I would start at the previously-mentioned number ;) and I found out who was the best player among the few to ever wear these numbers. Despite the few there are some good players

69-probably turn out to be Branson Arroyo
70-Domingo Cedeno may have been the only player to wear this
71-Peckinpaugh (as manager  ), Taylor Douthit as player
72-Classic Pudge
73-Kenny Rogers or Tony Phillips?
74-Urbina
75-Zito
76-probably Mike Koplove
77-Joe Medwick!
79-Erik Bedard may have been the only player to wear this
81-Mike Colangelo?
82-JLazor
85-if you wanna count August Busch Sr
88-Albert Belle
89-Scott Chiasson may have been the only player to wear this
91-Tim Spooneybarger may have been the only player to wear this
94-Felix Heredia (no one else unless you count an interpreter for the Dodgers)
95-Takahito Nomura may have been the only player to wear this
96-Voiselle was probably better than Mac Suzuki
97-Joe Beimel may have been the only player to wear this
99-Willie Crawford

When I started looking over these I honestly figured every two digit number would be taken at least once. But to answer the original question, I am surprised to learn that I could find no occurrence of any player ever wearing these numbers.

Supposedly there was an A's minor leaguer in a split squad game that wore a 102, and supposedly the Phillies went over 100 in one of their combined minor league camps. Hope you had fun playing at home

Wow, who'd've thunk it? I too would think that every two-digit number had been used at least once. Learn sump'm new every day. :D Of extra surprise to me is that no Met has taken #86.

That's interesting. So, until further knowledge, two Minor Leaguers have worn three-digit numbers, but as we understand it no Major Leaguers. Hmm. Wonder if there're any rules stipulating it.
