Thanks for the addys....I did not get a January Success..:(

When do you start sending to Spring Training and do you STOP sending to current players homes during the season?

Hope to be sending about 10 out this weekend.

A good mail day to start the month, after a week of nothing. Got Jeff Reardon 2/2 via home address (scan (http://www.baseball-trivia-game.com/ttm/players/reardon.htm)).

Also got Harvey's address list...it's huge, and I can't wait to start sending to more retired players. Thanks again to those of you who shared addresses with me while I waited for my book to come in!

Also got two 1985 Fleer Update sets I'd gotten on eBay cheap. Sure they'll be some nice cards to TTM with in there.

Never thought I would get Catfish Hunter...I try to treat all autographs the same. I believe that they are all created egual. Look at it this way...all the players parents had to make the same sacrifices to allow the players to achieve what they achieved. Just like what you do for your children (family).
So, all things are equal....HOF Catfish Hunter....backup C Brook Fordyce...with thier parents love they make it and hopefully forfilled thier dreams.

It can also make you some money (prospecting), and good, risky investments. It will be especially usefull, as the Midwest League all-star game is in my town this year. Too bad I missed Jay Bruce, Justin Upton, Cameron Maybin, Homer Bailey, and others by just one year, but I'm guessing I'll see studs like Tyler Colvin, Hank Conger, PArmelee, and Rowell in Midwest League action this year.

Yes. lots of returns for everybody. The one thing I don't get (and I am not trying to be critical of any player, especially those you are generous enough to send back autographs) but did you get a offer to join his fan club for $29.95 or something like that? Seems expensive....look at it this way...he makes how much...you make how much.....I'm not saying he should do for free...perhaps not at all.

I wanted to show a few Negro League returns that I put on a project sheet.

I send out about 80, got back about 65 this past summer.

Also, would like to invite you over the the "Baseball Music Rules" thread

http://baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=45269

On page 83 there is a song by Chuck Brodsky called "Ballad of Eddie Klepp". Click on the link and listen to it. Its about the 1st "white" player to play in the Negro Leagues!!!

Today did not bring any TTM requests but, not one, but two great gifts from friends in the hobby:

First was a gift of approximately 350 unsigned Mets cards from various years. This will come in very handy for my continued TTM requests to fill out my Mets collection.

Second was a very generous gift of signed cards from Pete Broberg, Tom Borland, Scott Bradley, Bruce Benedict, Chip Cannon, Jim Barr, Brent Lillibridge, William, Bergolla, Al Bumbry, Rich Becker, Jared Gothreaux, John Drennen, Doug Griffin, Alfredo Griffin, Mike Bordick, Bob Friend, Gary Lucas, Vince Faison, and Andre Ethier.

Once again, I am truly thankful for my friends in the hobby. This is what makes this hobby so great.

These redemption cards were inserted into 2005 bowman draft baseball, and come in all of the different parrallels, including autos and printing plates. Heres the complete scans of all 14 cards.

Success like this makes collecting college players great.

Aaron Bray- outstanding infielder from UNC Charlotte signed my 2 homemade cards. He also typed up a great letter. He said that he wanted to give my son something. So he called his mom and had her send a 4/6 she took of him last season. He signed that picture for my son also. In his letter he told me about how he thought that it was great that my son and I are into collecting college guys. He told me a little about himself. He told me if/when he is ever playing in Texas, he will email me, so we can get tickets. He seems like an all around nice guy.

Quite the list, MadHatter. I'll be watching your returns with interest...there's a lot of guys on your list I'd like to send to.

Personally, as of this afternoon, I'll have sent out 50 requests since January 8th, when I got back into TTM with a vengence. So far, I've had 3 successes, and hope to get a bunch more!

Pictured on the poster is 2007 Preseason 1st team all-american, and the eventual 2007 #1 Draft Pick David Price (atleast predicted by BA, but he is the best college player), and also Casey Weathers, and Pedro Alvarez (NCAA 2006 Freshmen player of the year, 2007 preseason allamerican), and on the schedules are stephen shao. All of this was sent in a poster tube, so everything is in perfect shape!

I also got a few pocket schedules from Arizona, but Vanderbilt definetly overshadows it.

Nice....I remember doing that myself. On the schudule, I would send a few off to Mr. Shao and see what happens. I did that with Drew Stubbs last year and was lucky enough to get a few back. Pocket schudules, as I undersand them, are going to be a nice collectable in years to come. Most even sell well on EBAy. Don't forget the Minor Leagues as most will send. Think of the Atlanta Braves organization as Richmond and Rome teams send LOTS of stuff.
And always, you have local friends in the hobby...share and be happy.

Today I got Jim Rivera 2/2 plus a CIC

I have noticed quite a few "younger" collectors in our small group and wanted to share a few things that I have learned. I won't presume to know more than they do...as what I read the younger group has got a real good handle on what the hobby and sport is all about.

Getting back the "older players" is indeed something to be treasured. Let me tell you a little about what my son Jon, 12 yrs old, and I do concerning them.

We find cards of the players and send off and wait for thier returns. We might even include a 'snip-it' of that player's career in our letter. When it comes back (hopefully like Mr. Rivera) we often will look at our Baseball Encyclopedia or one of our reference books and read about the player futher. The internet also is rich in this infromation.

The current players are great too but Baseball's great history can further be remembered when requests go out to the "older guys". Congrats of Mr. Rivera...now look him up!!!!

And what a better way than be able to do that then to ask the older players "what it was all about". We do that with our Pen-pal Frank Thomas. Podfan22...I know that you will be writing to him soon. Have fun, ask questions...be thankful.

Letters in the Dirt

For those that have heard the song by Chuck Brodsky "Letters in the Dirt"...that happened for me today. I have been shifting some of my baseball stuff around (per orders of wife). So I gathered up some of my stuff, storing it in those big plastic bin boxes, to make its way out to the garage. Well, on one trip, that is exactly what I did, trip, down the steps, with the bin box going flying...letters and stuff flying across the yard...(Imagaine Dagwood Bumstead taking on the mail man) and you get the image. Well, after picking myself up, dusting myself off...there they were....some of my baseball letters in the dirt.
I'm OK...a little bruised, a little embarassed...but I still have all my moveable parts. And if you know the song, at least my son didn't thrown snowballs at me like the fans in Philly did to Santa!!

Letters in the Dirt....

Interesting one today.

Ken Ryan 3/2. Ken sent back 3 cards, even though I only sent 2. The odd part is that only one of them is a card I sent him. That one, the '93 UD below, is smudged. My guess is he smudged my cards trying to sign them and replaced them.

Ryan is a cool autograph for me because 1) He's a former Red Sox 2) He's a native of RI 3) He played his HS ball one town over from where I grew up and 4) He still lives locally, and has a baseball academy in RI, and I met him while touring the facility.

Two successes and one semi-failure:

Bob Bailor 2/4 (Signed one card, kept two, and included signed postcard from his days with the Dodgers)

Pat Putnam 1/1 (Signed 1984 Mariners Team Leaders card already signed by Matt Young)

My failure: Ron Swoboda kept photos that I sent to him but included a note asking for $5/auto. Will return items if I am not interested in his fee. Has 8x10 that he provides and will sign for $10.

He is doing TTM project with Allen & Ginter cards and she sent it back misspelling his name (Bryan instead of Bryon). We have been chatting and trading for some time and he just included it as a kind gesture.....

I'm in shock

I opened up the mailbox today, and could tell right away it'd be a good day.

I got an OMLB signed from Bud Selig (took about 2 1/2 weeks)

I also got a card I need to send TTM for my "Rhode Island Native" collection, an a CD of baseball music from kearns643 (thanks buddy!)

Also got two other cards for the RI TTM's of the elusive Jim Siwy (thanks DaClyde) and Art Quirk (thanks sportlots.com!).

Then, I noticed there was also one of my TTM return envelopes in the box...these are always exciting...who could it be?!

I opened the envelope, pulled out the cards...and my jaw dropped. In my hand I had the card I sent to Hank Bauer a week before his death, in my hand, with a bold, beautiful signature on it. He also signed one of the index cards I included to protect the card.

It's a testiment to Mr. Bauer that even while his health was failing, he still thought about the fans.

Scans on my site!

GREAT day at the mailbox today, some interesting stuff:

John LaRose 4/2 in 5 days via home address. LaRose signed my card, my CIC, and both index cards I put in to protect my card. LaRose goes into both my native RI and Red Sox collections. He appeared in only one major league game, throwing two innings in 1978. The Senior League card is, as far as I can tell, his only card...and I only got it thanks to the kindness of a fellow BBF user! (scan (http://www.baseball-trivia-game.com/ttm/players/larose.htm))

Rogelio Moret 3/1 in 2 weeks via home address in PR. Former Red Sox. After I sent to Moret, I found this snippet about him "before the start of a game against the Detroit Tigers on April 12, 1978, Texas Rangers starting pitcher Roger Moret was spotted in the Ranger locker room in a catatonic state, with his arm extended holding a slipper. Obviously he did not pitch that day, and was immediately taken to a psychiatric facility and went on the disabled list. He only appeared in six more games after the bizarre incident." He signed my card and personalized the two index cards I had put in to protect the card. Oddly, he personalized it to my FULL name, first and last. (scan (http://www.baseball-trivia-game.com/ttm/players/moret.htm))

Davey Lopes 2/2 via spring training. Quick turnaround! A native Rhode Islander to add to my collection. (scan (http://www.baseball-trivia-game.com/ttm/players/lopes.htm))

Jim Thome 1/1 via spring training. Another quick return. (scan (http://www.baseball-trivia-game.com/ttm/players/thome.htm))

Also got a few cards I'd ordered to send to Red Sox ST on Sportlots.com and a really cool looking book from SABR - "Deadball Stars of the American League".
