Probably not very "P. C." in these days of not wanting to offend Native Americans, but they should be remembered as the BRAVES !

Boston Braves has a good ring to it.
BTW, it can't be too intimidating to play a team called the Doves. :D

I read many years ago that the Braves name originated because one of the owners was part of the Tammany Hall political machine, whose logo was an Indian head.

Anything but Beaneaters. The media is lazy enough now a days without being actively encouraged to use gas passing lines.

Red Caps is not bad either, too similar to the Sox though.

I tend to believe that a team being named the Braves or Indians would bolster the view of Native Americans positively not be politically incorrect. Native Americans had and have a culture that must not be lost. And for a Baseball team to be named after a people who thrived on this land just over 400 years ago is something that Baseball nor America should ever lose.

Um, how exactly does the name "Braves" preserve Native culture?

It depends on the scenario. NAtive Americans weren't as upset about the name Braves until the Atlanta fans took to another level by doing the tomahawk chop and wearing the headresses that have a sacred meaning. The name Redskins has always been controversial because the name itseld is offensive. Cleveland Indians has been mixed the since the name itself is based on the Native American heritage in Cleveland (its on Lake Erie, in Cuyahoga County. etc).

None of which answers the question.

My guess (and remember it wasn't my thought) is that having a Native American inspired name is a nod to the country's native american heritage.

I think that is a pretty good guess. :) Does that solve our little problem 666?

You're the one who needs a hobby, if I'm your pet project. :D

Well we are really splitting hairs here. How about acknowledge? Respect? Or better yet: Pay tribute to?

Any of those fit. That is, after all, what is intended by most of the names.

Not bad.
Interesting, though, to contrast the two Boston teams. The Boston Braves had so many official nicknames in the twentieth century, and the Red Sox went so long before officially adopting any nickname at all, took an old Braves one when they did, and then never changed it.
