44 wins 8 losses. That was Preacher Roe's record for a 3 year span (1951-1953). In my opinion that is absolutely amazing. Suprisingly for the 1951 NL MVP award voting... Preacher was 5th on the ballot, recieving 138 total points. Why was it that Sal Maglie of the NY Giants who's record was 23-6 and who's ERA was only .11 points lower recieve more votes? Insight please?

The Giants did win the pennant which had to help Maglie. Both pitchers were superb, but Maglie was slighly better. Both pitchers benefitted from massive run support.

Preach had an exceptional year in 1951. I remember many BROOKLYN fans wondering, after OUR horrible loss to the Giants in the Playoffs, why WE didn't use Preach to secure the win. The response...."WE were saving him for the the first game of the World Series"........the one that never came!
That decision was probably the dumbest one Chuck Dressen ever made.
