Put on waivers and unclaimed, this so so pitcher remained with his team and toiled on. He evolved into a 20 game winner. During his Cy Young season,it became the talk of fans on how well a part timer outfielder would hit whenever the answer to this question was on the mound. He couldn't hit a lick othewise. This pitcher also defeated another pitcher twice in one day.
Name this pitcher. For extra credit, name the part timer who hit like crazy one season when our answer was on the mound..

The pitcher is Jim Perry. The pitcher who lost both games of a DHer to him was John Gelnar. Have no idea on the part-time OFer.

He wasn't a part-time OF, but I called my Dad and he said that Norm Cash absolutely owned Jim Perry. The highlight of this was when he homered twice off Jim when Jim's more well-known brother Gaylord Perry was facing him.

Is the outfielder/utility player Rick Renick? He had a 2 HR game when Perry was pitching on May 29, 1970. Another HR when Perry was pitching on May 22nd.

The only other guy who seems to fit is Ted Uhlaender, but he wasn't a part-timer.

there was a stretch of time where Brent Alyea seemed to homer or knock in a bunch of runs only when Perry was on the mound. I can still recall listening to the radio broadcasts and the announcers pondering before the game as to what Alyea might do,since Jim Perry was on the mound.
