Does anyone have any thoughts on the QuickSwing? A few friends of mine enjoy it, and one of them has very fast bat speed and noticeable improvement throughout the offseason. It seems like it has helped him quite a bit.
For those of you who are unaware of what it is:

If I understand the unit...I would think it would hinder mechanics development. Does the ball just pop out the end of the tube???

Looks like it from the pictures on the website. It says its to "delvelop a short, quick, compact swing." http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1015479505804903720&q=quickswing&hl=en

Amazing! This is a typical example of excellent players, and experienced coaches who don't know what they actually do. What they think they do and what they really do, are completely different.
The coach in the video is clueless. If his players or Mauer actually swing the way he shows, they wouldn't hit.
And Molitor demonstrates and explains a swing that is not the one he actually executed in his career.
Look at these clips and see if you think their game swing is anything like Molitor and the coach showed in the "Quickswing" video;
http://firstpickclub.com/video/jmauer2.gif http://firstpickclub.com/video/jmauerfront.gif
http://firstpickclub.com/video/paulmolitor.gif
Plus, the young girl and boy who are in the video, have terrible swings. The only great swings are Joe Mauer's. And his swings in the video are close to his game swing, yet nothing like what the coach and Molitor describe.

Also - The problem with many of these new devises is they are shown using people who typically have decent swings. I would like to see the devise in action with a U12 batter. I think it would reek havoc on a batter's rhythm.

Doesn't it seem like younger hitters would be constantly leaning forward in anticipation of the ball popping out? Not sure about that device. Seems iffy.
What do you all think of the drill where someone soft tosses a ball from behind (through the zone backward) to the hitter. Wouldn't that be a better quick swing drill than this thing?

I use that drill and like it quite a bit - it seems to help my LL team understand the importance of meeting the ball out front on inside pitches.

Molina teaches the fundamentals of a great swing - quick, compact hands through the zone.

At least read Mankin's stuff if you aren't going to read Dixon and Englishbey.

I see a trend with you guys " making nice" with Mankin...good idea. It is the link to lead you back to " center" and away from cloning one planers and hammering away at the middle and ignoring the movement of the distal segments. Congrats . The explanations should be interesting :clapping

I don't think it's necessarily that bad.
To be successful, you do have to have a quick swing (aka Five Frame Swing).
However, whether it should be short or not is questionable. Also, I see a lot of swinging down on the ball in the clip.

If you want to no stride then the Quickswing is OK. You can hold the rear elbow arond the corner, preload the hips and drop and tilt
You will find any slop as the ball drops quickly

Mankin was a pioneer who disputed the hands to the ball crowd. He didn't get it all right but it's a good place to start. Reading Epstein, Mankin, Nyman and Englishbey will help you understand the discussion on the net. It is the progression a lot of people went to. I think Mankin has more right than Mike but his tht stuff is another matter and he doesn't address much of the swing.

I think we agree here Mark
His simple question? "Do both hands go forward at swing initiation?" can be the central question to build an understanding around
Are you rotating the barrel " changing ends with the bat" or are you tugging the knob forward.? Or as Steve asks" are you getting the damn barrel out there in the zone' ?
Understand and find that out first
I think Epsteins vertical bat on the " deltoid" required some THT to get on plane. He started vertical and lead the barrel into plane with the lead elbow up and rear down. Two approaches...potentially similar results

I think we don't. THT is nonsense by his description and how do you figure you like him when he thinks your partner Richard/Teacherman/Joebad doesn't see what is really there? Good luck with that swiveling stuff. You are on your own without Jack, Mike or anyone else for cover. If you have discovered something, congratulations, it's brand new. We'll watch and see if anyone agrees with you and Teach or not. Good luck this spring.

The PCR swings posted times after time had " bat drag" the top hand leading the elbow " was your definition.
Guess what ..that is both hands pulling forward.
When you tip the barrel you cannot do that. You guys never stopped anybody from doing it.
If Mankin defined THT wrong then it doesn't mean the top hand is not torquing the barrel instead of pulling it forward.
I am fine on my own. We went to State Final Two last spring and batted .327 team. How did you do?
My message has not changed. ...Find your BEST SWING.

I thought bat drag was when the top elbow was leading the hand, not vice-versa.....(as pictured below)

I think we are getting away from the original question, which was " Does anyone have any thoughts on the QuickSwing? A few friends of mine enjoy it, and one of them has very fast bat speed and noticeable improvement throughout the offseason. It seems like it has helped him quite a bit." I think this thread has been hijacked by talking about swing mechanics. That isn't what the question was about.

I think it is pretty cool. It is a tool. Best in no stride. You need to know how to set a kid up for no stride to optimize his chances.
Too quick to get segmented or stride and hit IMO.
It is what it says...quick

I think I saw him swing like that before... he was chopping a tree down! :D
Also, I particularly like the super-lunge he has going on there, w/ the totally bent front knee. I'll bet he swung like that a lot during his career - NOT! :p

I hate the Quickswing. If you have a no stride swing I guess it could work for ya, but I don't (I start open). I don't like anything that isn't similar to live pitching or a simulation of. I feel there are far to many fancy pants tools out there today. Just give me a tee and some BP and leave me alone
