Not that close. In 2005 Lee showed what he is capable of doing and it is much better than Sexson's best season.

I think you can really only look at Lee since 2002, when he finally start to perform like he had been expected. Once you do that, I think it gives Lee the edge over Sexson. Over the long term, like you've compared above, they are very similar, but that's just do to Sexson's earlier years.

But if not for Lee's career year in 05 a different conclusion would have to be reached.

True, but the question is "who is the better player" and based on the last 2 years, I would answer "Lee". Last season Lee was injured, but now that I've seen him fill, what I believe to be his potential, I think he's the better player (i.e., if both players were free agents and asking for the same contract, I would take Lee).

Sockeye's stats made me see it was closer than I expected, but I think Lee is going to continue to perform very well and by the end of his career will have a much better career than Sexson.

I voted for Lee.
But discounting one player's finest years while discounting the other's worst and then doing a comparison is unfair.
I think Lee is a bit overhyped at this point in time. Yes, he is a great player. But the way people talk about him, they make it seem like he's a perennial Triple Crown threat and an MVP candidate. Remember, so far in his career, 2005 was an aberration.

True but he started out 2006 like it was still 2005. Before the injury he was hitting .318/.448/.614. After he came back he just wasn't the same. Now I don't he he would have had quite the same numbers in 2006 if was healthy as 2005 but I think he could have gone .315/.425/.600 with 40 HRs. We shall see what he does in 2007.

I'm not trying to compare Lee's best seasons with Sexson's worst...I'm just basing the comparison on the question, "who is the better player".
I read the question to be "who is the better player today", where others may have looked at it as over a career. Hey, I love Richie Sexson and my son proudly wears his Sexson jersey (albeit a Brewers jersey) as he was his favorite player when we lived in Wisconsin, but if picking a player today, it would be Lee for me.

Lee has been comparable to Sexson offensively and is much better defensively.

He is also a far better baserunner and basestealer. Lee takes this one, and it isn't very close if both are healthy.

Richie Sexson is a better home run hitter, but Derek Lee is a better pure hitter.

Well, I think you're comparing McIntosh to Golden Delicious here. Let's not judge Richie just by the last year only, career vs career is a much closer comparison than one year.

The two are even in personal favorite stats like
RC/27
Lee 6.40 career
Sexon 6.39 career
OPS+
Lee 123
Sexon 124
Not looking at leauge or park adjustments because I'm far too sleepy, I'll have to go with Doctor Lee to break the closeness in offensive stats with his superb glove and baserunning.
