View Full Version : Where do you sit?

This is a fairly obvious question that I'm asking all attendees of games and enthusiasts of parks, when you're at a game where do you tend to try and get your tickets for, why, and how much are you usually willing to spend? What were the best seats you've ever had, what were the worst?
Most of the time for Jays games up until last season (when I'd only go to a game or two a year) I'd get seats along either the left or right field line usually a section or two away from the corner. I liked the sightlines that were there and they presented a decent foul ball opportunity. Last season I got a flex pack for 10 games, 8 of which were on the upper deck in the infield. Frankly I loved these games, the view was great cause I was always in the first couple rows and I was never more then a section or two over from the plate, so if I renew for this season I'm probably gonna go for the same plan and at less than 10 bucks a game it's a great deal.
Best seats I've ever had were on the aisle of the lower deck 8 rows up right behind the plate, best part of it being that they were free.
Worst seats I ever had were one year in the early 90's, and my parents wound up buying 4 tickets off a scalper for a game one night when we were in Toronto anyway for the day. It was a night game with the roof open and we were on the last row of the upper deck. Even with the wall behind us it was chilly as hell, coupled with my brother's youthful fear of heights and it was basically a miserable time watching a game.
So what about you guys?

I tend to try to get bang-for-the-buck at least in stadiums I've never been to before. You tend to get sunburned less in Left field too.
Jacobs Field-I usually get Upper Outfield Reserved and stand on the home run porch in LF. If I was going bang-for-the-buck, first choice would be bleachers as close of a row to the field and as close to the LF line as I could get.
McAfee-Bleachers are good
Dodger-LF Loge Boxes are best
AT&T-LF bleachers aren't bad
Cincy-Terrace outfield is good
I'll see what happens at five more parks this summer

At GABP, I usually sit in section 522 or 523 because it is cheap and still a great view.

Well I've never had really "bad" seats at any baseball game I've ever gone to. That being said, the two occasions that come to mind were the time my friend and I bought scapler tix at the Ravine - they were in the second deck down by the foul pole - not the best views. I actually prefer the bleachers to those seats. Another time I had seats in the third deck a little past first base - not bad except that the aisle seats we had were a great view of the people walking up and down the aisle more so than the view of home plate. :grouchy
My favorite seats that I usually get are these inner reserved level:
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/Marckymarc71/100_0169aShowcase.jpg
But my favorite seats were the ones I sat in many times as a kid. My uncle's boss had season tix here:

For me I tend to like sitting in the upper deck somewhere behind home plate since it provides the best view for someone who can't afford tickets closer to home plate plus it provides some of the best views of the stadium. For Yankees stadium I prefer to sit in the right field bleachers as that is probably the best bang for the buck and has a certain atmosphere that the left field bleachers don't have. The best seats I had were when I was probably too young to appreciate them, I was about 4 rows behind the Yankees dugout at Yankees Stadium on Disney Day in '87, (i remember seeing mickey so i think it was some sort of Disney Day). The worst seats I ever had I actually had twice. I sat in the last row, section 35(last section before the right field bleachers in the upper deck), last seat overlooking the bleachers. Anything that was hit to right field was a guessing game/fan watching because the angle of the seats made it unseeable.

Once I got seats 3 rows behind the Jays dugout, on the last game of the season. After the game, the Jays players came out of the dugout with batting gloves and sweatbangs and stuff, and tossed them into the crowd. I snagged a Carlos Delgado wrist band. But I lost it sometime when I was younger. I have no clue where it went.
The worst seats I ever had were here:

Horrible. Couldn't see the jumbotron either.
I usually sit in RF, as close down as I can. Right behind the visitors bullpen is the best. The tickets are about $20.

These have been my seats since '95. Best place to watch a game. While it's great to sit right behind the dugout from time to time (if you're lucky enough), over the long haul, upper deck behind the plate is the best place to watch "the game". Most people think of the upper deck as "nose bleeds". What I always say to these people is if the best place watch the game is right behind the dugout, why is the press box always up a bit, behind the plate.
Whenever I go to a new stadium I check out how the view from "my" seat is. If you've never sat in the front of the upper deck at YS, you can't appreciate how great the overhang is. Only place I've seen thats better is the front of the Tiger Stadium upper deck. If you sit right behind the plate, you are dangerously close to the action.
Unfortunately, the newer the stadium, the further back the upper deck. That seems to be the trend.

I like my seats in the RF stands at PNC Park, section 142. Great Home Run territory, and right off the riverwalk. I also like sitting in the upper level behind home plate.

the seat I normally take, is the couch in front of the TV, its free.
when I went to shea and yankee stadium once, I was in the upper deck and down right field, they were about the same seats, I couldn't really compare.
The best seats at a game, is most likely going to a t-c valley cats game (short season team of houston astros) I got the 2nd row to the right of the cats dugout.
I like sitting down the 1B(RF, w/e) line, you can see the everyone upclose but the OF's. you see the pitcher, the batter, the batter running to 1B, the infielders. If I was behind homeplate, I would have the big net in my face, and the batter and catchers backs would be to me.

My favorite seats at Tropicana Field are upper deck behind home plate. Great bang for the buck at $8 unless the Yankees or Red Sox are in town. I also like to move down & sit by the visitors' bullpen on the 3rd base side. As for best seats I've ever had, probably about 3 or 4 years ago at a Pirates spring training game at McKechnie Field. I went online to buy tickets (which I almost NEVER do) and the best available came up on the 2nd row behind home plate.
Worst ever--I sat in the upper outfield under the scoreboard at old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.

Good Thread... got me thinking.
I have had my share of box seats, in places like St. Louis, Philly, Shea, Cincinnati, Wrigley, but more often that not I sit in the bleachers.
The 4 different World Series I have been to (all in STL) have all been in the bleachers, perhpas because when you camp out for tickets, those are what are avaialbe to the public. Lou Brock Day? Bleachers again!!
Other trips, when I have bought tickets, I more often than not end up in the upper deck, or outfield seats, Yankee, Camden Yards, New Comiskey, etc. This is usually a financially motivated decision.
I often score free tix through family or business connections, so I rarely shell out the big bucks. Such as the time I took the family to Busch Stadium one last time before it was torn down. My son is a big Rolen Fan, so I got as close to third base as I could. Fourth Row, just past the infield. Diamond Box seats which were way too much, but very much worth it, all at the same time. I've seen the most games in St. Louis... probably about 200, and have sat just about everywhere.
But for the big games.... I see to be in the bleachers. I guess I get it from my father, who has been to SEVEN different World Series, and something like 15 or 16 different games... every one of them in the bleachers.

At Fenway, you sit where ever you can seats, and your thankful for them too.:D That being said, the only game I've gotten there I sat down the 1B line about 35 rows back. My dream seats would be right next to Pesky's pole. The seats are angled a little akward, but there about as close as you can get to the Infield, but I would still be with my fellow bleacher creatures.

When I attend games at Isotope Park here in Albuquerque, I usually sit behind the Isotope's dugout which is along the third base line.
The company I work for has season tickets (two seats) right behind home plate and everyone at work gets a pair each year. They're really good seats, but I hate sitting right in front of the net.
I've sat along the first base line before and they're nice, but you better make sure you're paying attention to the game because if not, the first baseman may not catch the ball and it'll zip right into to the crowd! HAHA...anyways that's my two cents.

I generally try to avoid the upper deck if I can, especially at RFK, which is graded pretty steeply. I get a slight feeling of vertigo in cases like that, and it tends to be persistent throughout the whole time I'm up there, so I generally will always pony up the extra cash to get me into the lower bowl somewhere. (Citizens Bank Park's upper deck didn't bother me very much, however.) That said, I tend to get seats by a base line and right past the infield so that I can get a good view of everybody on the field. I don't really have a preference on which base line, though.
I've sat along the first base line before and they're nice, but you better make sure you're paying attention to the game because if not, the first baseman may not catch the ball and it'll zip right into to the crowd!
That's part of why I like base line seats -- definitely keeps me more involved in the game.

I dont pay to go to ball games. At home I have a large HDTV, with a surround system, and as far as I'm concerned its the best seat in the house. I'm just a working stiff anyways and couldn't afford to go to a lot of ball games in the first place. My wifes Boss however is loaded and we go to about 5 to 7 free games a year at Comiskey. She takes my kid to Wrigley about the same, "I wont go because I despise the Tribune CO.".. At Comiskey we sit in 1st row right over the visitors dug out and at Wrigley she gets 2nd row over the Cubs bull pen, "at Wrigley the bullpens are down 1st and 3rd base line midway between the wall and the infield.
One can get spoiled in seats like that and it makes it hard to sit elsewhere. As a kid I use to live in the bleachers of both ballparks. At Wrigley it was left field mostly tho Ive often sit in center and right. At old Comiskey, back in my drinking days, I used to like RF upper box seats cause it was right down the aisle from the only Augsburger beer stand in the park. As a kid my old man loved the grandstands at Old Comiskey, but, you had to get there early to avoid the pillar seats.
Ive never sat in a upper deck. I'd stay home first. Other then that neither Chicago ball park really has bad seats.

Our seats at Camden Yards are in section 16, row BBB (4th) seats 5 & 6. We LOVE 'em...also have a strong fondness for sections 33-39, which may have the best overall view in the house.

We usually pick the cheaper seats in the upper deck. Unless we can get standing room only tickets. We rarely sit in our seats. Maybe for a few innings at the most. We like to walk around and see the game from all areas of the ballpark.
Best seats ever? It was my first game- I was 4 years old. We saw the Yankees play the Indians and sat about 4 rows behind the dugout. My cousin had season tickets with his company. Oh yeah- it was in Shea as it was 1974 and Yankee Stadium was under renovation. I still have my ticket stub.

I usally sit behind Homeplate Last Row Upper deck seats 1 ,2 and 3.
I once sat right behind homeplate at Shea(Free Tickets....Best friends mom is a season ticket holder) My 2 friends were on the Jumbo-Tron. I was too busy keeping score.
I had great seats at Cademn Yard. I could have touched Bobby Abreu. It was sooooooo great to Chant Let's go Yankees in Camdemn Yards since 60 percent of the fans are Yankeee fans and the Oriole Fans didn't care.

In retrospect the worst seats I ever had were my favorite game and my best seats came in my least favorite game.
The worst seats were in literally the last row of the upper-deck of yankee Stadium. We actually brought and used blankets. We were off to the 1B side of the stadium. We could see everything which was great except the pitch location. It was my favorite game though because it was the first one i went to. My first thought was of course about the grass :D (It's so green!). It was in 2005 in June for Mothers day/my brothers birthday. Day game at 1:00. Kevin Brown (my favorite pitcher at that time, don`t ask) pitched 7 shut-out innings before being taken out. A-Rod gave us a lead in the 5th or 6th inning with a solo HR. Giambi was being booed by everyone of course except my family who believe you have to support a Yankee no matter what. I went with just about everyone on my mom's side of the family (about 10 people came). Other than the booing the fan around us were pretty quiet.
The best seats I had were club seats in Camdem Yards in a pathetic Yankees 5-0 loss yesterday with Mussina pitching. Believe me the score didn`t tell the story. The Orioles pitcher was a nobody who had like a 1 hitter going into the 8th or 9th. They had bases loaded in the first and got no runs out of it somehow. It was a hot day with no Yankees fan nearby other than my uncle (who got the tickets from a friend, the area around it is great though and we had a good time). We finally got a rally going late in the game and the O's got out of it. The Yankees also had a sloppy game which I always hate. I kept going inside to avoid the heat to watch on TV and back outside to watch the game alive before heading back inside to avoid the heat and repeat the process. A tough game, we finally got a rally going but it collapsed without a single run.
It just goes to show you good seats don`t always equal good time.
Back to the point of the thread I usually sit somewhere in the upper deck. You can see 90% of the field and most importantly it's cheap. I sat in the left field bleachers once (last row, last year in the 3rd home game of the season, Yankee Stadium of course). We had a great time, my grandpa, mom, and uncle came, my brother and I had a ton of fun with the cheering, it was also before A-Rod was booed so it was great. The guy who checked our tickets said "You don`t look like Blecher Creatures". My grandpa got a kick out of that to. I sat once in club seats in Camdem Yards once which was the awful game. I`ve sat with some great seats in the Ducks stadium but I suppose that doesn`t count. I`ve had a handful of Yankee games in Yankee Stadium, one in Camdem Yards, and 3 games in the Ducks Stadium.

What are the Lower View outfield seats like?
They're decent. You get a pretty decent view of everything, and it does help that the field's symmetrical, so pretty much as long as the action doesn't head into the corner at which you're nearest, you're in decent shape, provided you're not way back in the deck. I've taken in a couple of games from one of the sections down the right field line; it's kind of neat watching a home run fly over the wall from that spot.
Some of the seats under the overhang aren't so great by comparison; you kind of feel a little closed in sometimes.

I'm new here, so I hope there's no problem with my going back to old threads and adding my comments (the previous post in this thread is almost eight months old). There's one particular board (for fans of the game show "The Price Is Right") where they get very, very snarky if you revive a thread that's older than six months.
Anyway...
I generally sit in the upper deck at Shea Stadium. I'm familiar with the seat layout so that when I buy tickets, I ask for specific seat and row numbers so that I can sit in the seat directly above the entrance to the concourse... this way I've got a railing I can lean on, and nobody is directly in front of me.

I've only been to GABP in Cincy once but had third row seats behind the Reds dugout. Great seats but $60 a pop is a little much.
I actually prefer sitting in the lower upper deck behind home plate. You can see the whole field and it's a lot cheaper than the box seats.

When I go to Shea I sit in the upper reserved 95% of the time. With the amount of games I go to, if I sat anywhere else, I'd be bankrupt. I usually end up sitting somewhere between sections 8 and 20. The views there are decent, you can see into the Mets dugout, and the biggest men's room in the stadium is over there (all other bathrooms in the upper deck are so small that you inevitably miss some of the game if you go between innings). Occasionally I'll sit in the Mezzanine if there are ticket specials, or the field box if a friend is able to get a hold of corporate seats. I very rarely end up in the loge... I've probably only had loge tickets once or twice.
Best seats I've ever had were for Mike Piazza's first game as Met, which was May 23rd 1998 against the Brewers. I had field box seats probably 4 rows behind the Mets dugout... so close that my picture was on the Diamondvision for one of those FanCam segments.
Worst seats I ever had were in some of the last sections in the upper deck at Shea, all the way in the outfield, all the way up. I've only sat there for games against the Yankees and playoff games though, so I was just happy to be there.
If I go visit a ballpark for the first time, I try to get good seats. Field level if possible and if the price is reasonable.

At Oriole Park, I've sat all over the place. My most recent visit in May I was up in the cheap seats, Section 382. However, a couple of times I've gotten lucky, as my aunt holds partial season tickets to Section 26, 4 rows behind the Orioles' dugout. (By the way, I don't know why they mark Section 4 on the seating chart, as I always thought that was the blind right field foul corner).

I usually buy cheap, then move to the third baseline. Good views and good odds for foul balls, just not for me yet. I know one thing, if I lived in Pittsburgh it would be behind home plate -- $27.00 for about 15 rows up from home. You have got to be kidding me. I swear that was cheaper than Oakland when I sat 8 rows behind home. (Both tickets bought on the day of the game, for 2.)

I've sat pretty much everywhere at Dolphin Stadium at some point or another, but I usually end up in the lower deck (because the upper deck is usually closed) down in the blue sections, but you can pretty much move and sit wherever you want, and I like to move around during the game sometimes anyway. I have a friend with season tickets in Section 43 (the baseball-only box seats down the first base line), row 2. Really fun to sit down there, you're closer than a high school field. I've been in the Publix Power Alley left field club level once before, but they didn't open that section this year. I've been in a suite once before, club level a few times, and all over in the main bowl except the left field upper deck (but I was there for a Dolphins game once).
I've had some really great seats at other parks, and some really bad ones too. Worst one that sticks out in my mind, high upper deck at the Metrodome far down the left field line, pointing straight out towards the outfield. I had good seats at Petco and the Cell
