David Wells signed a 3M-1 Year contract with the San Diego Padres that could pay him 4M in incentives. Last year Wells was 3-5 with a 4.42 ERA. Wells joins Greg Maddux, Jake Peavy, Chris Young, and Clay Hensley in the Padres Rotation. Wells still needs to pass a physical for the deal to be finalized.

You know, I thought he might make it one more year. He really worked hard to come back for Boston and did pitch well when he did make it to the mound, and I thought perhaps that there was a little more fight in him.

Wells is an old, washed up drunk. And he's been so during some of his best seasons. With that said, the Dodgers have done too much and will easily take the division. Jason Schmidt, outstanding pitcher. Brad Penny, great season in '06 minus the ERA spike in the second half, will hopefully be the Penny that was expected in Florida for all those years. Derek Lowe, keeps the ball down and the ERA too. Chad Billingsly looks promising too. They have a nice hitting blend of veterans and youthful contemporaries that should mesh well. The Padres are a strong team still: Peavy had a down year but should bounce back, their outfield and middle infield is comprised of playmakers that find away to bring in runs when it counts, and Josh Bard should be a sleeper that delivers this season. Spacious PETCO Park would attract veterans like Wells and Maddux, helping them to reach their incentives without having to break their hips. Next year, the Padres should be set up well to grab a good free agent starter and some bullpen help, as Trevor Hoffman can't pitch forever. Alas, this year the Dodgers will take the NL West.

Dodgers are my pick for WS Champs. They look pretty strong this year.

How about the Mets? They shoulda been there last year. Pitching is a question mark, which is always a negative, but their line-up is a great mix of rising talent and productive veterans. They'll likely have two MVP candidates this season in David Wright and Carlos Beltran. If their pitching is just decent, and they can strike a deadline deal, they'll run away with the National League.
