View Full Version : NJ Wood Bat Ban Passed
Link to Law (http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2006/Bills/A3500/3388_R3.HTM)
Starting this July (180 day grace period) there will be no more, non-wood bats in youth baseball in the State of NJ. (You can use non-wood bats in tournaments where teams from other states participate)
I love the idea. I prefer wood bat baseball, but would like to have seen the organizations make this same choice....
I am not against legislating safety... If there were no safety legislations coal miners would still be using canaries...
Hey.. anyone want to buy some aluminum bats? :laugh
“Non-wood bat” means any non-wood baseball 2[or softball]2 bat including, but not limited to, a bat made of metal, titanium, scandium, aluminum or any other alloy compound, but shall not include any wood, composite, laminated or composite-coated wood bat that shall be approved for play upon verified test data that these bats perform, weigh and are balanced like wood bats; 2and2
I find the bolded parts very interesting out of the link. So does this mean you can't use the $200 metal bat, but it's alright to use the $300 composite one? I know those aren't the exact prices, but I hope you get the jist of what I'm trying to say.

While most think the law is crazy, I'm actually suprised there aren't alot more states with the law. From doing a google search I learned odds are there will be more. From coaching my son's 9/10 team last season I saw firsthand it can be dangerous. We had a couple kids that could drill the ball hitting against an infield of kids still learning the basics and moving even slower. While I remember as a kid using metal bats you have to figure the technology has increased so much that what we used is probably pot metal in today's standards. Imagine a player coming in for a bunt and the batter carrying his $300.00 bat reaches back to swing away. Breaking it down that way it's amazing more kids aren't hurt by metal bat hits.
Besides all this why wouldn't we want our kids to start learning to play baseball the way it's meant to be done. We have our kids using metal bats all their lives until they become a professional player. It's no wonder the rest of the world is raising better hitters than the U.S.. How many countries are so poor they use either wood bats or sticks for years. Then when they hit the big time they are already ahead of our learning curve. While our players are just learning to use wood they've been doing it for years so it feels natural to them.
Don't get me wrong though. While I sound all for wood bats my son will be carrying a big stick until they say he can't.

This is the heading to your post: NJ Wood Bat Ban Passed Then you go on to quote a law banning non-wood bats. Your heading is exactly the opposite of what the new law says. Quite misleading. I opened your post, expecting to read that New Jersey banned wood bats.
If there were no safety legislations coal miners would still be using canaries...
And sending 12-year-old boys down into the mines.

c. Between 1991 and 2001, 15 players were killed by batted balls from bats determined to be made of non-wood aluminum, composite, or unknown substances, while only two 1deaths1 are known to have been 1caused by bats1 made from wood
Almost everyone was using Aluminum, so of course more injuries/death are going to happen!

That's great news! Baseball is meant to be played with wooden bats only.

This ban has not passed the legislature yet! It is still a Bill. Although it appears that they are trying to fast track it into law.
