I have to ask, why?

Cubs signed infielder Tomas Perez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Finally, someone to fill the void Neifi Perez's departure left on the Cubs. Tomas Perez's OPS has dropped six years running, bottoming out at 510 last year. He hit .212/.224/.286 while getting 241 at-bats for the Rays. The Cubs shouldn't be reduced to carrying him.

Time to start stockpiling the middle infielders I guess.

Right now, we're looking at Cedeno, Izturis, Theriot, DeRosa, and Perez; and four of them are confined to the infield.

I'm still confused about how this lineup is going to come together, and spring's approaching fast.

Actually, DeRosa can also play the outfield. That's not where the Cubs plan on having him play, but he can play there. I think they also said they have Theriot working on the outfield.

I think if the season started tomorrow, the lineup would be this: (in no particular order)

C Barrett
1B Lee
2B DeRosa
SS Izturis
3B Ramirez
RF Soriano
CF Jones
LF Murton

Can DeRosa play CF? If so, we could have Theriot and Cedeno battle it out for 2nd (I dont want Perez to get in there), move Soriano to right and play DeRosa in CF. That would actually work out nicely, and we can trade Jones for whatever we can get. But then again, its justa hope.

It looks like DeRosa has played every position except pitcher, catcher, and CF.
