I don't buy many newer cards these days, but today I stopped by a dealer that's near my home to check 'em out, and bought a couple packs of '06 Bowman Heritage, because the guy said they looked like the nice '49 Bowman set.

I got a bunch of rookies I didn't recognize, but the cards are nice looking. In addition to the regular cards, there were a couple that were quite small (but apparently still part of the regular set, guessing by the numbering), some that had shiny borders (a one per pack insert, I'm guessing), and then, one really interesting "card" - a printing plate! That's right, the pack came with a slab of metal in it.

It's the black printing plate used to print card #112 Bronson Arroyo, and it's a 1/1.

Not sure if it has any value, but I never expected a peice of metal in my pack, especially one used to MAKE the cards.

Interesting...seem to be going for $3-25, depending on the player, with a few exceptions for hot rookies.

Thanks for the link, I hadn't even gotten around to looking on eBay yet.

Can anyone explain the "smaller" cards to me? They appear to be sized like some older Bowman cards...but are they just regular cards? Short prints?

Mike-Very nice pull on the Arroyo Printing Plate. It's a new thing that Topps has been doing and they are very popular. Some of the plates can sell for a good chunk of change if you are interested in selling it.

The small cards are one-per-pack inserts. BTW, two, maybe three of your cards will have "BHP" prefixes. Who did you get? Those guys are the prospects. Also, if you got a Mike Pelfrey card in that set, would you like to do a trade for it?

Thanks for the info on the small cards...guess it makes sense that they're inserts, since I got one in each pack. :D

For the mini-cards, I got #77 Garrett Atkins and #220 Francisco Liriano.

For the BPH cards, I got:

#7 Ben Copeland
#12 Brad McCann
#29 Welinson Baez
#86 Matt Antonelli

(sorry, no Mike Pelfrey)

Four other cards that say "rookie card" on the front are #242 (Tony Pena Jr.), #223 (Adam Loewen), #231 (Anderson Hernandez) and #247 (Jeremy Hermida, which is one of the shiny bordered inserts).

Nice looking cards, though...actually feel like cardboard, not plastic! :clapping

Any Liriano card is worth holding onto right now, especially if he comes back to form like he should.

As for TTM requests, you may want to think about sending the card of Matt Antonelli to him once the season starts. He was very gracious about signing for me TTM last season and is on the fast track to play either 3B or 2B for the Padres in the next 2 years. He'll most likely be in AA this coming season.

Thanks for the TTM info on Antonelli...I'll add him to my always growing "TTM Box".

And I agree on Liriano...he looked amazing before getting hurt this year.

Next time I hit the card shop, I'll have to pick up a new price guide. The latest one I have is Beckett Baseball Card Plus with Randy Johnson as a NYY on the cover, from Mar/Aprl 2005. :noidea

Definitely get that Antonelli card signed. Him along with Clayton Kershaw, and Andrew Miller are sure to be one of the best prospects in 2-3 years.

Well, I have both Kershaw and Antonelli's autographs pulled from Bowman Draft. Too bad nobody's made a card of Andrew Miller yet.

Ben Copeland shows a lot of upside, and is a future leadoff man.

Brad McCann is Brian McCann's brother. He has a ton of power, but as of now strikes out too much and came off of a bad year this year (I think he hit maybe .212 with 18 homers).

Welinson Baez is a toolsy 3B prospect with speed and a good arm. Unfortunately, he has practically no bat control as of now. However, he should develop.

Sorry. I actually have the Just Justifiable card of Miller, but I meant of the MLB sets.
