In the spring of 1941 disgruntled former Cubs great and manager Gabby Hartnett told the press that P.K. Wrigley refused to spend the money to get Marty Marion, Pee Wee Reese, and Eddie Miller. All of whom were available in the years before 1941. That is one hall of fame and two all star shortstops in case you are counting. Of the three only Pee Wee lost time to the war. The best the Cubs could do was Lennie Merullo of .240/.291/.301 fame instead.

Just imagine the Cubs of the 40's with Pee Wee Reese (and 50's) at SS or Marty Marion. Imagine what the Dodgers or Cardinals would look like without their anchors at SS.

Or Shawn Green. But then again, we wern't the only ones to do that. The Shawon DUnston draft pick was nice though, could've worked out a lil better though. And we had the brains to purchase the contract of Banks.
