Hi Fans,

My name is Peter Stoneham and I am one of the grandsons of Charles A. Stoneham. I have always known that he owned the Giants, but since you can fit what I know about baseball into your eye & not feel it, I know almost nothing about him.

My father was actually the half-brother of Horace Stoneham and the two never met. I'll let you fill in the blanks there - I have only sketchy details on that topic anyway. I have never met anyone from Horace's side of the family, but would love to some day.

My father Russell never really said much about their early days & being a stupid kid, I didn't think to ask more. However on a whim I googled Charles' name & found this site:

http://www.baseball-fever.com/archive/index.php/t-9725.html

At the site noted above & others I have heard all sorts of wild things about Charles A.:

"corrupt "bucket shop" operator + politically well-connected swindler, Charles Stoneham"

"Stoneham was a member of Tammany Hall and counted Al Smith and Tom Foley among his political allies. He was a curb market broker of dubious integrity who had several brushes with the law because of his shady business transactions."
(For examples of Stoneham's low character, see New York Times, 12 Feb., 1908"

Since I am a nobody, it intrigued me that a relative of mine was so-well known and seemingly despised.

Do any of you folks have any more details on the story of Charles A.? I am looking for any facts, stories, rumors that anyone has - good, bad, or ugly. I know that there is unsavory information out there, but I really want to know the whole story.

I never met Charles or Horace, but knew my grandmother until she died in the 60's. My father was a very kind and wonderful man who loved baseball and the Giants. Russell died in 2002.

Thanks very much in advance to anyone who has any info,

Peter Stoneham

I think that someone at a Stoneman family reunion will have some stories and artifacts to show off.

Hello,

Charles Stoneham was my great grandfather. I am your Dad's sister's (Mary, born 1898) grandson. I have some info on Charles (and his ancestors) that I would be happy to share with you.

your first cousin once removed,

Arthur C. Clark

After reading this thread, I am moved by the fact that this board can help bring together family members who never met.

Maybe it's best that whatever you share about family history be done privately, since some of what's been posted is delicate.

But, God bless you all, and your efforts to reconstruct your family lineage and its history.

Stuff like this makes America the great country it is.

Hello Peter and Arthur,

I too have a Stoneham family connection, but it is rather unusual. My 2nd cousin, twice removed (meaning two generations ago) was known as "Mrs. Stoneham," and was seen in public with Charles A. Stoneham at many occasions from about 1920 to at least 1932 (as far as I have been able to trace). I am trying to discern the particulars of their life, but as you know - the Stoneham family has been rather private on such matters. I would be very pleased to share what I know with other family members. Please contact me privately, so we can discuss this further.

Jon

I am still looking for some clarification of information I have, as well as share what I have on Charles Stoneham, his brother Horace A. Stoneham (not the son), and a wife named Julia Stoneham - married to Horace. This is a very interesting tangle, and I am hoping that someone from the Stoneham family can help me unravel the mystery. It may be that we are related through marriage a couple of generations back.

Thanks, Jon
