It had to have been Roy Gleason, who was AWARDED (the official term...earned or simply even "got" are also acceptable) a Purple Heart and doubled in his only at-bat.

Well Bill Peterman was half right. I was just guessing, Peterman was the only player I could find with a 1.000 ba that got it during WWII.
Did Roy Gleason get his purple heart in WWI or WWII.

May've actually been in Vietnam. He and I share a birthday (April 9), but he was born in '43. Too young for Korea, so I'm guessing Vietnam.
Although he had only that one at-bat in '63, he appeared in 8 games and it seems he crossed the plate three times. I'm guessing pinch runner?

Took a while, but I finally got the reference. heh. It was indeed Vietnam. Perhaps I'll get the book from my local library. :lookitup :)

It was Vietnam. Bill Campbell (I think) and Dave Schneck (I know) also received the decoration in Vietnam.

Wow, what a story. Simply amazing, and a one-for-one-of-a-kind guy.
Such sadness, loss, and tragedy after such hope and promise. Yes, he certainly earned that Purple Heart (ironically earned during an event that cost him his beloved WS ring), but I'm so glad he finally got some recognition in the baseball world. ...*pauses*... So much to say, but I wouldn't even be able to find the right words. I'm definitely gonna read that book.
Thanx for the reference, KC, and thanx much for finding that article, Old Sweater. And thanx for this trivia question, janduscframe.

Yes, he pinch-ran in his first seven appearances before pinch-hitting and doubling in his only plate appearance.

I was looking for Gleason. Have Purple Heart winners ever opposed each other on the mound? I know Spahn and Wilhelm won them, but I doubt they ever pitched against each other during at least a regular season game. Anyone know?

Wilhelm was with the Giants 1952-1956 but I can't find box scores or pitching matchups.
